Prep School Newsletter Friday 20 June 2025

In our Science Week celebrations this week , we welcomed two fascinating guests—Mr Kent from WaterAid, to whom our Young Entrepreneurs proudly presented a cheque for £542.07 and Alannah from Whizz Pop Science, who wowed us with amazing experiments exploring water acidity and how we can help protect our oceans. It was lovely to see our Reception parents join us for their children's class Assembly—what excellent story tellers your children are! Well done to our brilliant sports stars who shone in their fixtures this week, and to all our boat builders who thoroughly enjoyed testing their creations in the KC Boat Championships! The winners will be announced next week!

Thank you also for your generous clothing donations—your support means so much. Chaplain Katie

We look forward to welcoming you at your Curriculum Information Evenings next week - please see the 'Dates for your diary' section below for details. Monday is Moving up Day and the excitement is growing amongst the children to meet their new teachers and some new friends!

What happened in School this week?

Science Week at KC Prep: From Clean Water to Creative Waste!

Science Week got off to a meaningful start as our Young Entrepreneurs proudly presented a Cheque for £542.07 to a representative from WaterAid—an outstanding result from their successful sale last term. In return, he delivered a series of thought-provoking workshops, raising awareness about the global importance of access to clean water. The children observed how dirty water can be filtered using everyday materials, helped build a simple handwashing station called a tippy tap, and discovered just how heavy it is for children in poorer countries to carry water long distances.

Throughout the week, pupils across the school focused on designing boats made from recycled materials, ready for Friday’s much-anticipated KC Boat Championships.

Stay tuned for the results!

On Wednesday, the learning continued with an exciting visit from Whizz Pop Science. Alannah wowed pupils with interactive experiments exploring water acidity and inspired us all with practical ways to help protect our oceans.

Forest Explorers

This week we have been learning all about the animals under the sea. We have been sharing some of our favourite books such as ‘Commotion in The Ocean’, ‘Rainbow Fish’ and ‘Smiley Shark’. We went to the forest and made a giant shark and squid using the large sticks and logs. We enjoyed giving the shark some nice spikey teeth by snapping the little twigs. We also made Rainbow fish in the forest using all the natural materials and we made paint with the mud and the water. The Forest is certainly the coolest place to spend our time when the weather is this hot!

Reception

This week we have continued the topic Manipulate, Compose and Decompose in Maths. The children have consolidated their learning about the attributes of 2-D shapes and selected shapes for a particular purpose. We have explored how shapes will appear when rotated and that a shape may be harder to recognise when its orientation changes. The children have had fun selecting, rotating and flipping shapes to fill a given space. We have also combined shapes to make new shapes, challenged our thinking and solved problems.

We also worked hard getting ready for our class assembly. Each of the children chose their favourite thing from the past year to share with everyone, including some of our favourite songs! The children were amazing and we are so proud of them!

Year 1

Year 1 have been investigating different materials in Science this week; looking at their names and discovering that these might be different from how they feel. They are looking forward to testing these with some experiments in the coming weeks. In Computing, we have continued to explore making simple animations on Scratch Jnr! We loved making bunnies jump, as well as making cats dance across the screen!

Year 2

Year 2 have been enjoying all things Science this week! They thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and getting the opportunity to become scientists and inventors, testing whether liquids were an acid or an alkaline and launching their boats in the boat race. In our science lesson they looked at climate change and how it is affecting the planet, by matching statements about greenhouse gases and other climate change issues to their matching image. The children then spoke about what changes we can make to our everyday lives to help reduce what we're using, reuse what we can and the different things we can recycle.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a workshop by WaterAid this week. We learnt about why water is so important and how many people live without access to clean water. In the workshop we were able to see how different materials filter the impurities in water. By using four plastic bottles and letting water travel through gravel, sand, cotton wool and coffee filter paper, we could see which material left the water the cleanest. Mr Kent demonstrated how communities with little water make sure not to waste any with an ingenius devise that lets water trickle slowly. It was fun creating our own tripod system. Finally, everybody picked up a bucket weighing the same as one a child would have to carry water in every day. It was difficult to imagine how anybody could walk 10 miles carrying such a heavy weight.

Year 5 Zipping about!

Year Five 'zipped' into the week and have zoomed through each day. Thay have immersed themselves in everything 'Science Week' related, especially interested in the Water Aid workshop which made them feel incredibly privileged to have access to clean water.

Maths lessons have followed the curriculum on volume and their DT biscuit project has been full of tasty analysis and design. Half of the year group are taking part in next week's marvellous Matilda performance so have spent time perfecting their parts whilst the remaining class members have undertaken some Maths 'art' challenges and a mini project on animal life cycles. Their research and presentation skills have certainly been put to the test.

Year 6

This week has been incredibly exciting and educational! We kicked off by investigating a crime scene in English, which had everyone putting on their detective hats. For Science Week, we made boats and were amazed by how our eyes dilate in low light. The Whizz Pop Science Show was a blast, literally, as we watched things explode! We also learned about the vital work Water Aid does around the world. Our pond dipping adventure was a highlight, where we discovered lots of newts. Additionally, we had the pleasure of helping Reception make their boats, and the final Year 6 group went to Pembury Primary to complete their Bikeability qualification. It’s been a busy and fun-filled week!

As part of science week, Year 6 visited the Senior School science block and enjoyed a session of pond dipping in their little pond. There was lots of life in the pond, but the highlight was the newts.

Sport News

Our Prep athletes have had a fantastic week of athletics success! We are incredibly proud of the pupils who represented Kent College at the IPS Athletics Kent Championships at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford. Competing against the best prep schools in the county, our girls ran, jumped, and threw with outstanding determination, achieving several personal bests. Special congratulations go to Emilia, who won a bronze in the hurdles and a silver in the high jump – earning her a place at the National Finals in July. Well done to Emilia, Harriet, Eva, Amelie, Isabella, Sophia, and Cyra for their incredible effort and team spirit throughout the day.

Our Year 5 and 6 athletes also travelled to Hazelwood for a triangular meet against Hazelwood and Rowan Prep, where they performed brilliantly – with the Year 6 team emerging as champions. Meanwhile, our Year 3 and 4 pupils competed in a scorching home meet hosted by KC against Wally Hall and Russell House, showing great resilience and team spirit to take the overall win. Well done to all our Prep pupils – we are so proud of your achievements!

Special congratulations to Emilia in year 6 on her Silver Medal in High Jump and Bronze in Hurdles. Well done to all of you! Miss Webb

Megan scoring goals!

Congratulations to Megan, who played with the Under 10s Raw Skills team at the Saffron Sixes tournament in Eastbourne over the weekend. It was the team’s very first time playing together, and they achieved an impressive second place finish! Megan was superb on the pitch, scoring a couple of goals and making some brilliant passes to set up her teammates. A fantastic effort all round from the whole team.
