Mansa Aziz graduated from Morehouse College, where he received a BA in Cinema, Television, & Emerging Media Studies. As a burgeoning filmmaker, he hopes to create content that positively and accurately depicts Americans in the African and Muslim Diaspora.
Growing up, Mansa watched movies with one-dimensional representations of African-Americans and Muslim Americans. While the Black experience in cinema may have evolved over the years, Mansa believes more films are needed that depict people of the African diaspora with various religions, ideologies, and backgrounds. Through the lens of his Muslim identity, Mansa saw movies that constantly depicted Muslims as terrorists, criminals, and careless misogynistic individuals.
Now an adult with the means to make a change, Mansa aims to tell stories that show the grounded and complex characters that represent the community in which he and millions of other people were raised.
Hailing from the small town of Voorhees, New Jersey, Mansa was raised by his mother who taught him the religion of Al-Islam. His mother also instilled in him an insatiable appetite for community service. Since the age of five, Mansa has engaged in numerous community service activities with organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the NAACP.
His passion for film started at a young age as he consumed a diverse set of movies through both of his parents. When Mansa was a sophomore in high school, he took a class called TV/Media. While writing and producing content in the class, Mansa claims he found his true calling, making movies.
During his free time, Mansa is working on developing his photography/filmmaking techniques, skills, and brand. In the summer of 2018, he created his own production company, Five Pillars, to help achieve his dreams of making it into the entertainment industry. That same year, he also co-founded Soul House productions with fellow Morehouse College student Justin Evans.
Throughout his tenure at Morehouse College, Mansa has written and produced a myriad of content, including creative writing pieces, a short play, and spec ads. Most recently, his senior capstone film entitled At-Taghābun premiered at Morehouse to much critical acclaim.
