Please review these for important updates and information. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need any further information on any of these events.

Miss Handford’s summer challenge!

Throughout the year, Miss Handford has been sharing her RECIPE for success during assembly time. Now it is your turn to whip up all the ingredients and showcase the elements of the recipe. Whether it's a video, picture, drawing, poem, or song, let your imagination run wild! Get creative and let the fun begin! Miss Handford

Entries must show how you have demonstrated all of the elements of the recipe - resilience, empathy, creativity, initiative, positivity and excellence. Winners from each year group will be invited to join Miss Handford for a celebration lunch in September. Deadline: Monday 9th September 2024. Electronic entries can be sent to head@kentcollege.kent.sch.uk. All other entries should be delivered to the Prep School Reception. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Prep School Choir - Hospice in the Weald Open Garden Party

The Prep School Choir were invited to sing at the Open Garden Party at the Hospice in the Weald on Saturday 8th June 2024.

Luckily the rain held off and we performed outside to a welcoming audience. We sang a number of songs including Counting Stars, Skyfall and Hall of Fame.

What happened in School this week?

French Day

Our annual French Day was a blast, celebrating French culture by wearing the colours of the French flag, enjoying fabulous food and getting lost in the brilliant Play by Onati Productions. Bleu, Blanc and Rouge berets were happily bobbing around the corridors and classrooms!

Key Stage 1 had fun with activities about France. Early years had the opportunity to make some fabulous designs, while Year 1 learned more about French produce and interesting food. Did you know France has as many kinds of cheese as there are days in the year? Year 2 made posters featuring different French icons.

Key Stage 2 enjoyed watching a bilingual play presented by Onati Productions. It was about William, an English knight, who came to France to find a suitable wife for King Henry VIII and to paint a famous portrait. The play was interactive and the pupils had a great time understanding a variety of French words.

Year 3 played Boules outside with help from Year 10 students, Year 4 made fortune tellers which included important French phrases, and Years 5 and 6 completed a quiz.

Merci beaucoup. Madame Moreau

Forest Explorers

We have been learning all about the ocean and the importance of keeping the sea creatures safe. Plastic is very dangerous for ocean life and we became recycling officers for the afternoon and put all the recycling in the correct bins. We will be making sure that we NEVER drop our litter and place it in the correct bins at all times.

Reception

The children in Reception were excited last week when some caterpillars arrived in the post. They cannot believe how much they have grown already and that some of them are now in their cocoons! We cannot wait to see what happens next!

This week we have continued to learn about farm animals after our visit to Blackberry Farm. The children have enjoyed writing facts about their favourite farm animal. They also made up clues about a farm animal for a What am I? game. It was fun reading the clues and guessing the animal.

Year 1

Year One are now enjoying an Art topic called "Fabricate!" and will be testing different materials to create finished products, looking at how we can manipulate them and how they can work together. This week we made an under-the-sea placemat using paper weaving. The children had to cut very carefully both their frame and the strips to feed through to create their patterns. We thought carefully about which colours would be best to represent the ocean and which colours sat well next to each other. It was quite challenging to keep all the pieces in place!

The children have also really enjoyed looking at where the oceans around the world are; many of us were able to talk about which ones we had been to, flown over or would like to explore. We looked at which animals might live in each different area and over the next few weeks we will be investigating these creatures in more detail, as well as the different zones found in the ocean.

Year 2

We had great fun celebrating French day!

They learnt lots of facts and created some wonderful posters about France.

Year 3

To complement our history topic of WWII, Year 3 enjoyed making poppies using clay. We created a petal template, rolled out our clay, cut the pieces and then moulded them together. Next week, when they have dried, we will paint them and put them on display.

Year 4

4B have been very busy with rehearsal and preparation for their assembly. They are putting the finishing touches on their marvellous, South American inspired headdresses, ready for the carnival. With the help of Mrs Lawson-Wood they are finding their beach vibes, ready for Copacabana Beach fun. They have been inspired by Joel Sartore, National Geographic photographer (‘Photo Ark’ – One man’s quest to document the world’s animals) and had much fun replicating images in his style which will be included in a fantastic music video. I hope you are looking forward to our assembly as much as we are.

Year 5

Another busy week in Year Five, full of questioning, learning, laughing and playing. French Day was a highlight, as was exploring the processes of erosion and transportation in Humanities. Shape and decimals have been a focus in maths so on Thursday the children engrossed themselves in reflective symmetry (all four quadrants) and enjoyed playing Dino Dig to revise co-ordinates.

Year 6

Year 6 have been continuing with some old topics and starting new ones this week. In English we have continued reading ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and begun to unravel the complex relationships between the lead characters. There has been some heated discussion regarding how we felt about Hermia’s duty to marry Demetrius and the options that Theseus gave her! In maths we completed geometry and direction by practising translation and reflection in all four quadrants, whilst in art our cushions are reaching completion and they really do look amazing.

We were excited to begin a new topic in computing which is to plan, design and film a short piece about the Prep School. To start us off Ms Squance came down to talk to us about the story we need to tell through the film and teach us about camera angles, background music and editing. We can’t wait to get started! The highlight of our week was French Day; we loved the food, laughed at the play and practised our French conversation. Please don’t forget the up coming Year 6 assembly which we have also found time to rehearse for.

To keep ourselves warm and inside during Gardening Club, we started to varnish our pebbles and make mosaic plant pots. The enthusiasm of all members is amazing! Well done Gardeners.
