Canbury School Newsletter 7th February 2025. ISSUE 358

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

Welcome to another edition of our school newsletter!

It's been a busy and exciting week here at school. I was particularly impressed by the fantastic engagement of our Year 8 students during this week's life-saving workshop. They approached the training with real enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, which is incredibly important. These skills are invaluable, and it's wonderful to see our students embracing the opportunity to become potential lifesavers.

It's also been lovely on my lunchtime wanders to see so many students taking part in our lunchtime clubs. I could see a number of students exploring new interests and developing their talents. Remember, students are welcome to drop in to any club each week. If you're looking for something new to try, be sure to check out the club board in the science corridor for a full list of options. There's something for everyone!

Jerusha takes to the stage

We are always delighted when we hear about activities that our students are getting up to in their free time. This week we heard that Jerusha is performing as a dancer in the pantomime ‘Dick Whittington and his cat’ with the Edge Hill Players in Wimbledon. She performed in both shows last Saturday and will be performing in two more shows this Saturday on 8th February.

First Aid: Knowledge is Power

Year 8 students learned crucial life-saving skills this week thanks to a visit from the London Ambulance Service. The "London Life Savers" session provided hands-on training in CPR and defibrillator use, empowering students to respond in emergency situations.

All hands on deck for Year 8

The London Ambulance service shared with us some useful information which families might find useful:

https://www.defibfinder.uk/ use this to find the closest defibrillator machine to your location.

First aid trained people can choose to register at https://www.goodsamapp.org/ to show that you would be willing to be contacted to attend if someone near to you needs resuscitation, this would be only until the first responder arrives.

Round up from Children's Mental Health Week

This week, Ms Chorazyczewska encouraged students across all year groups to participate in a heartwarming form time activity designed to foster positivity and recognize the strengths of their peers. Each form was given two envelopes: one titled "I think you're good at..." and the other "I think you'd make a good..." Inside each envelope were pre-written cards with different positive qualities and potential jobs.

Students were tasked with selecting a card from each envelope and, after careful consideration, giving it to a classmate they felt best embodied the message. This thoughtful exercise encouraged students to acknowledge and celebrate the unique talents and potential of their fellow students. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to offer encouragement and build each other up.

See those smiles! The Power of a Positive Word

In addition to this activity, students were also invited to express their thoughts and feelings on a designated graffiti wall in the Pastoral Office. As you can see from the photo below, this provided a creative outlet for self-expression and reflection.

CAVE PAINTING at Bourne Hall Museum

In the deep time of prehistory early men crawled down into the darkest caves and used light from primitive candles to paint pictures of themselves and the animals they hunted.

They left behind a vivid record of their way of life and some clues of what they believed in. Discover how and why these paintings were created.

Then by flickering light try to create your own cave painting in our very own ‘caves’.
