Afghan Women on the Move
Last week at Parliament House of NSW, Aleena, Lianné, Abby and Mariia attended the launch of the documentary - My Mother and I: The Untold Stories of Afghan Women. The documentary highlights the voices of 13 Afghan mother–daughter pairs, diving into the ups, downs, and in‑between moments of their relationships while offering personal insights into identity, culture, migration, and the bonds that hold them together. The launch was attended by the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley, Member for Blacktown, Mr Stephen Bali and Ambassador for Afghanistan, his Excellency Wahidullah Waissi.
Top 50 Women's Art Prize
Congratulations to Amelie in Year 8 and Bianca in Year 10, whose artworks made the Top 50 at the Women’s Art Prize! Amelie created a delicate sculpture from found and discarded paper, whilst Bianca worked in photo media, expressing her connection to Maroubra Beach. The exhibition showcases the creative expression and artistic excellence of women and girls. We're very proud of both students.
International Women's Day Breakfast
On Tuesday 10 March, students and staff gathered in the Margaret Fischer school hall to mark International Women’s Day with a special breakfast event. The morning brought together members of our community to honour the achievements of women, reflect on the progress toward gender equality, and inspire one another. The breakfast featured a delicious spread, accompanied by a special music performance from Trinity and Shyloh, creating an engaging atmosphere. Students could write a time capsule message to their future selves and what they think gender equality will look like in five years time. The International Women’s Day breakfast is a meaningful occasion, reinforcing the school’s commitment to respect, equality, and inclusivity. Thank you to all who contributed to making this event a success, and let’s continue to celebrate diversity, empower girls and women and champion gender equality every day.

Acoustic Wednesday International Women's Day Edition
Our latest Acoustic Wednesday concert was a fantastic success, with a completely full room! This special edition concert celebrated International Women’s Day and featured a wonderful lineup of performances showcasing songs originally performed by female artists. A big congratulations to all of the talented students and staff who performed and thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. The energy and encouragement from the audience made it a truly memorable lunchtime concert. If you are a student who sings, plays an instrument, or would like to perform something else at a future Acoustic Wednesday, please speak with Mr Benson in CAPA. We are always looking for new performers to join the lineup! Many thanks to Bianca G in Year 10 for taking such wonderful photos!

New to the Collection
The kid's guide to speaking your mind without losing your cool by Matt Agnew Help sharpen up your child's thinking and debating skills with this fun and engaging book that includes imaginative activities to encourage cool, calm and rational thinking, from one of Australia's most popular scientists.
Poster Boys by Scott Woodard A terrific Australian contemporary novel. An unlikely trio band together trying to gain the support of all students to push for change of outdated principles at an elite grammar school in Melbourne. Contains themes of unhealthy competition, group dynamics and bullying, rebellion, self-interest and the misogynistic attitudes which can still permeate in society. Best suited for readers aged 14 and up.
Good Young Men by Gary Lonesborough A gripping and intense read exploring many issues. Contains themes of family, community, racism, growing up Aboriginal, LGBTI, friendship, truth telling and injustice.
Phoenix by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley Full of some big issues, there are a wide range of characters in this story – from those with racist and elitist attitudes, as well as down to earth and good people who can help make the world a better place. It tackles coping with change, the upheaval caused by separation, animal cruelty, friendship and hope. A terrific book for lower secondary readers.
Swearwolves by Steve Worland A fast-paced, funny book, which is full of adventure. This book does not actually contain any swearing, just blank spaces where swearing would be. Luna is a great character who is really trying to fit in and find some friends, while dealing with an ancient curse. Will suit those in lower secondary who like a few laughs mixed with some scary sounding (but really quite friendly) werewolves.
Amazing Inventions: Comic Books – A graphic history by Blake Hoena & Illustrated by Daimon Hampton A fascinating look at the history and development of combining illustrations with words to tell a story. It travels through all of the important milestones from hieroglyphics to superman, through to everything that we now enjoy, including graphic novels and manga.
Happy reading and happy learning!

MONEY 4 CHARITY!! Victory Laps is a charity-style initiative that supports different causes each month. We aim to raise awareness about community issues through donations, consistent social-media engagement, and participating in local kilometer-based activities such as swimming, cycling, running, and walking. Each month, we highlight a new organization or social challenge encouraging people to get active while contributing to meaningful change. By combining movement with advocacy, Victory Laps creates a supportive community that promotes wellbeing, connection, and social responsibility. Why? - A social action project in Big Picture Academy is a student‑driven project where you identify an issue that matters to you or your community, research it deeply, and then design a real‑world action to create positive change. It’s not just a school assignment—it’s a way to connect your learning to something meaningful outside the classroom. These projects involve raising awareness, supporting local organizations, creating resources, running events, or developing practical solutions to a problem. The whole idea is that you take ownership, follow your interests, and use your skills to make a genuine impact.
