Class 5 Learning Journey Spring Term 1

Literacy

This half term we have been developing our skills to be able to write a non-- chronological about Queen Victoria. We first looked at technical language such as monarch and multi- -lingual. We then moved onto looking at features of a non-chronological reports such as facts, sub-headings and questions. After that, we focused on 'ful ' and 'less' suffixes and different sentences types.

The children then wrote their own non -----chronological reports about Queen Victoria. Mrs Eagle and Mrs Short were blown away with the facts that the children could remember about Queen Victoria!

Maths

We started the half term by looking at place value and developing our skills to solve problems. We then moved on to addition and subtraction, pictorial and written methods to add and subtract two 2D numbers. We then moved onto looking at fractions of shapes, objects and quantities focusing on 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 3/4. I n our final week we learnt about position and directions and the language that we use when making a turn. For example, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

The children have once again made Mrs Short and Mrs Eagle so proud this half with their maths work. You're all super mathematicians!

Lira

In Lira we started off the half term by looking at The Three Javelinas which is a story similar to The Three Little Pigs that is set in a desert.

We then looked another book linked to The Three Little pigs but this time it was The True Story of the Three Little Pigs where Alexander the wolf said that he was framed. During our LIRA sessions we used our inference and deductions skills to try and work our who was telling the truth, Alexander or the pigs.

Topic

This half term our curriculum driver was History with a focus on the Victorian era. The children began by developing their knowledge of chronology and we learnt about how long ago the Victorian period was by building our own timeline.

As our hook for this topic the children were treated to Mrs Short's very strict Victorian classroom with children sitting in rows and hopefully not having to wear the dunce hat!

We then explored how life was different for Victorian children from wealthy and poor families and compared this to our own childhood now. Class then learnt about Victorian seaside holidays by looking at lots of photographic sources and then finally explored the Elementary Education Acts which paved the way for the education children have today. We all decided we would rather be children now than in the Victorian times!

.

Science

In science this half term we have focused on seasonal change. We have learnt about the 4 seasons in depth, particularly focusing on how plants, animals, events, activities and clothing changes. We then investigated how the weather and daylight hours change through the year.

RE

In RE we have been looking at the key questions 'Why are some times special?'

For the first two weeks, we focused on Hindu festivals. Th first festival we looked at was Diwali and we learnt about how Hindus prepare for the celebration. We then looked at different Rangoli patterns and had a go at making them.

We then looked at the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandham. During this festival, sisters give their brothers a bracelet and the brother promises to protect them. However, traditions have changed over the years and now Hindus give bracelets to anyone that loves and protects them. Class 5 chose someone who loves and protects them and made a bracelet for them too.

For the final three weeks of term we looked at birthday celebrations. First, we focused on Gurpurab which is a Sikh festival celebrating Guru Nanak's birthday and then for the final two weeks we looked at Wesak which is a Buddhists festival for Buddha's birthday.

Celebrations

During this half we have had lots of children show the school values and were awarded a certificate! Mrs Eagle and Mrs Short have also enjoyed seeing all your home learning that has been shared on Seesaw.

What a wonderful way to end the half term! It was fantastic to see everyone having a great time at the Valentines disco.

We also has an amazing trip to Cannon Hall where we became servants for the day. We had the opportunity to make soup, bread, crumble and sugar mice, churn butter, wash clothes using a dolly and a mangle and we even got a tour of the house!

Next half term we will be learning ...

Have a lovely break!

Stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you back in a weeks time.
