Newbury Primary School Issue 11 - Friday 9th August 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Acknowledgement of Country and Acknowledgement and Commitment to Diversity:

We proudly acknowledge The Wurundjeri People as the custodians of our school land.

We openly welcome and accept everyone regardless of their background or beliefs and promote a respectful school culture at all times.

Please treat our staff with the same understanding, compassion and respect.

We have some exciting things occurring this term including – Science Week, Prep Edendale incursion, Year 1 Wild Action incursion, Year 2 Dinner, Year 3 Aussie Wildlife incursions, Year 4 Maps and Mayhem incursion, Year 5 and Year 6 City Tour extended excursion, Footy Day, Father’s Day and Special Persons Stalls, Life Saving Victoria incursion for all year levels, kinder and seniors group visits and District Athletics. We have also had The Book Fair.

In addition to this, students have the opportunity to attend a Community Club at recess and lunch where they can do different activities. Our dedicated Education Support staff also run a wide range of Play Support Activities during the breaks. This Play Support offers students the chance to be occupied and engaged during the breaks and try something new. Our wonderful ES staff can be found in bright orange vests running a great range of activities to support our students in play.

Staff work with students before each break around Play Preparation where students are set up for success out in the yard. It follows the following formula:

A= Area. Which area will you play in?

B= Buddy. Which buddy will you play with?

C= Choice. What choices will you make about your play time?

D= Duty. Pick up five for Newbury, get a drink and go to the bathroom.

We have had many new students starting at our school, so to our new families joining us, welcome to the Newbury Primary School Community. We look forward to developing a working relationship with you and trust that you and your child feel welcomed and secure in our learning community.

NAPLAN RESULTS:

Our NAPLAN 2024 results have been recently released and have shown pleasing improvements in both Years 3 and 5. In 2024 students were reported against the following proficiency standards:

• Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

• Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.

• Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.

• Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Our results have shown that in Year 3 our students are performing above our network schools in reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. We are performing at the same level as our network schools in writing. In Year 5 we are performing above our network schools in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. We will continue to work towards improvement across all areas to provide the best learning opportunities for our students.

SCHOOL UNIFORM:

A reminder that students need to wear school uniform at all times. There have been a number of students who are wearing blue or grey pants, this is not permitted. Any pants, shorts, skirts or jackets need to be black. Windcheater hoodies are not permitted at any time.

Our official uniform supplier is PSW, located at 2/283 Rex Rd, Campbellfield VIC 3061. They can be contacted on 9768 0337.

A reminder that the office has our school beanies for sale for $18.50. Please see our friendly administration staff for assistance.

Our enrolment process is as follows:

Please enrol in your closet school just in case we do not have a place become available. Once the decision has been made, we will be in touch via email with the outcome.

HEALTHY LUNCHES:

It is important to provide children with a balance of healthy and nutritious food to fuel their brain and body during the day. Please ensure that you provide our child/ren with something substantial to eat such as a sandwich, roll, wrap or salad as well as other tasty and healthy treats for morning tea. If possible, avoid the use of packaging and support our goal to have as much nude food as possible.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE:

The types of absence that require Principal approval are:

  • Bereavement
  • School refusal
  • Family holiday
  • Cultural observance- example Eid, Ramadan
  • Leisure or social activities
  • Special event
  • Participation in elite sporting event/training

Please contact the Principal via the school email absences@newburyps.vic.edu.au to seek approval.

If your child is absent, please notify us using Sentral to explain their absences. All absences must be accounted for on the day of absence.

The diagram below shows the link between regular school attendance and achievement. Regular attendance is essential to assisting with social, emotional and academic development.

BIKES AND SCOOTERS:

At Newbury Primary School, we promote health and fitness and encourage students to ride or scooter to school as a great way of starting their day. It is terrific to see many students riding their bikes or scooters to school, which assists them in being healthy. Please make sure your child is wearing a helmet and that once they enter the school grounds, they walk their bike or scooter in. When crossing the road, students should also walk their bike or scooters across the crossing for additional safety.

WE ARE PAPERLESS:

Just a reminder that all information notices will be delivered through Sentral and school website. Only notices that require parent permission will be sent home.

Please check the app or website regularly for updated information.

SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL:

It has been noticed that some students are being dropped off at school early or left at the school office way past the time that staff are supervising. Please note that supervision for students before school commences at 8:45am and after school until 3:25pm. Staff are not on duty beyond these times. Please do not drop off your child before this time or leave them waiting after school beyond this time as they will not be supervised. For those parents who do so, a letter will be sent home and if it continues, the Department of Education will be notified.

If you are having difficulty with pick up and drop off, our Out of School Hours Care provider After the Bell provide an excellent program. Details can be collected from the school office.

ALL DAY GRAZING:

At Newbury Primary School, we understand that students need food to fuel their brain and that they are hungry during the day. It is great to visit classrooms and see students nibbling on carrot sticks, cheese, rice crackers, fresh or dried fruit, yoghurt or vegetables. We encourage students to bring along healthy snacks that they can munch on in class so ensure you pack some into their lunchboxes. Some suggestions include; baby cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, dip and crackers, pretzels and small cans of tuna. Having these in containers where possible, also helps to reduce the amount of rubbish around the school. Please refrain from providing food that may affect any anaphylactic students.

We are so pleased that you are a part of our school community and thank you for choosing Newbury Primary School. We look forward to working together positively, so that together we can provide the best learning environment and supports for your child.
