Nukumea Newsletter Term two, Week SEVEN

Kia ora e te whānau,

Thank you for your understanding with our recent Teacher Only Day. Our teachers had an excellent day meeting with teachers from our neighbouring schools. This helped us to learn more about the changes to the Maths Curriculum and further developing our ability to teach maths across all age levels.

Reports

At 3pm on Friday 5th July student report pages will be available for viewing, with a curriculm highlight and general comment plus progress charts added. You can access this information by clicking in to the 'Nukumea Report 2024' page. If you want to know more about the terminology used in the progress charts, click 'About This Page' and it will bring up our Hero parent presentation. We will not be printing reports however you are able to print your own copy if you wish by clicking the print icon at the top of the page.

Three-way Learning Conferences will be happening early in Term 3 (dates and how to book these will be shared at the start of Term 3), which is an opportunity for teachers, students and whānau to meet to discuss student progress as outlined in the report.

Students who have not had 10 weeks at school (this affects our new entrant students or any new students that have started mid term) will not be receiving a progress report. This is because they haven't been at school long enough to meet the progress benchmarks. All our new entrant students have a 10 week meeting with Caroline where she will comment on our transition to school goals.

Upcoming Important Dates

  • Wednesday June 19 - Online Safety evening
  • Thursday June 27 - Matariki Disco
  • Friday June 28 - Matariki Public holiday
  • Friday July 5 - Last day of Term and Reports published

Birthday Celebrations

We appreciate birthdays are special and that we want to celebrate them at school with cakes and baking. However, we are conscious that we do not want to set a precedent that every child must bring in a cake etc for their birthday. Therefore, we ask our whānau to not bring in food and treats for their child's class - this also aligns with our Healthy Food at School Policy. We thank you for your support and understanding.

If you wish to do something to recognise the birthday at school, you can talk to Sarah Burnett about donating a book to the school library. We would place a notice on the inside cover noting who it was donated by for their birthday and present it in class that day.

Online Safety Evening - next Wednesday, June 19th 6:30-7:30pm

The challenge we often encounter with our child/ren's use of internet connected devices is one of social coordination. It's hard to know what expectations to set when other families might be doing something quite different. As we are still a small school, we have a real opportunity to create some shared expectations and boundaries that will greatly benefit the digital experience for all of our children.

Some key questions we will explore:

  • What are some practical strategies to support safe use of the internet?
  • How can this be aligned/reinforced with the tools/resources used at school?
  • I'm thinking about if/when a mobile phone is given to my child. What are some ideas for safe and responsible use?

We already have a few parents signed up, but we would love to have some more! Here's the link to sign up: https://tinyurl.com/2bs84pkp

Any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact: andrewc@nukumea.school.nz

Matariki Disco - Thursday, June 27th 6:30-8pm

This is just another reminder that we have our very first school disco coming up on Thursday, June 27th in our school hall.

You are welcome to:

  • Drop your child/ren off at 6:30 and meet with other parents in the staff room for snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Rejoin us at 7:45 for a few songs to dance to together
  • Stay for hot chocolate at 8pm with your children, after such time we go outside to enjoy some star gazing (weather permitting)

Also, if your child/ren would like to request a song to be played at the disco, you can add it here.

It's been great seeing the sun come back out this week, so we hope you have a wonderful week.
