Principal's Message
Farewell to our Year 12 cohort!
This is the speech I gave on Thursday 25 September for the Year 12 Presentation.
Good morning and welcome to our special guests, families and our guests of honour, the class of 2025. Thank you Gyugum for your welcome and acknowledgement to country. Acknowledging our First Nations peoples and their ancient and ongoing connection to country where we live, love and work together allow us the opportunity to celebrate together in friendship.
We respect our separate and shared heritage and histories. We take on the great responsibility of ensuring the health of the land, the air and the waterways of this ancient country. We are resilient and learn from others experiences as well as our own, We reflect on our views and share them without anger. We build on friendships. And we work together for a better world.
Today marks a milestone: a pause at the crossroads. Year 12, as you sit here dressed in your best uniform, it’s worth pausing—and breathing in this moment. You have earned it.
When I look across this graduating class, I see resilience, creativity, and heart. Many of you have navigated disruption — a global pandemic, its rippling effects, periods of remote learning, social and emotional tensions, a once in 100-year flood and then another — yet here you stand. Like our school and its buildings, You held on. You adapted. You rebuilt and You grew.
Your year 7 year was perhaps that last normal. Yet through all of this, you persevered and from here you will move into the world with your education.
Here you sit as graduates. From the Latin ‘gradus’ literally meaning a step. A step climbed on a ladder or stair and figuratively a step towards something. Here you sit graduates, your Mullumbimby education in your backpack - the wisdom of years, subject content and the love and respect of your teachers and families ready for the next step. Here you sit graduates, what will your next step be?
Year 12 if there is anything that you take with you from your secondary education here at Mullumbimby High let it be this:
- The power of your voice. Raise it with courage for what is right, to advocate for yourself or for those that have not yet found their voice.
- Your power of discernment. Use it to seek out what is true, to make choices about what will be best for you, those you love and those you will impact with your decisions.
- And the power of love. Love is not just a sign in the paddock. It is our connection to one another, to ourselves, and to the world we are shaping. Carry it with you—in the way you build relationships, in the way you pursue your passions, and in the way you contribute to a more compassionate and hopeful future.”
To the families here — thank you. Thank you for sharing such an incredible group of young people with us for six short years. Your steady support, encouragement and belief have made all the difference.
Year 12 — you’ve already achieved so much. Your upcoming exams are just another step to the next step.
Use your voice with courage, your discernment with wisdom, and your love with generosity. Congratulations on your graduation!

Technological & Applied Studies (TAS)
Community & Family Studies (CAFS)
Congratulations to our Year 12 Community and Family Studies (CAFS) class of 2025 who have now officially graduated from Mullumbimby High School. Over the past two years, this group has shown dedication, teamwork, and resilience while exploring topics such as family structures, community groups, parenting, and the balance between work and family life. Their willingness to support each other and contribute thoughtful insights has made them a pleasure to teach.
We commend them on their achievements and thank them for the energy and positivity they brought to class. As they step into the next chapter of their lives, we wish them every success and look forward to seeing the impact they make in their communities.
Hospitality Stage 6 - Our Stage 6 Hospitality students have successfully completed their 35 hours of industry work placement, gaining valuable experience in real workplace settings. Students embraced the opportunity to apply their skills in customer service, food preparation, and safe work practices, while also developing confidence and professionalism. They are now preparing to begin their barista training, where they will learn the art of coffee making and beverage service. This next step will further strengthen their employability skills and open future opportunities in the hospitality industry. Congratulations to all students on their achievements so far and best wishes for the training ahead!
Year 8 Materials & Production – Metal
Our Year 8 students have been hands-on in the workshop this term, creating personalised dog tags, flat-pack fire pits, and even silver rings. The highlight? Putting their fire pits to the test with roasted marshmallows! A great mix of creativity, skill, and fun.
Year 9 & 10 Construction
Students in Year 9 and 10 Construction have poured their energy into making stylish cement-top coffee tables. These projects have challenged students to combine precision, teamwork, and practical building techniques—resulting in some impressive, finished products.
Year 10 Design & Technology
Year 10 Design & Technology students have been hard at work on their “mini majors.” Their projects show just how wide their creativity stretches: e-bike stands, foldable soccer goals, guitar stands, fishing rod holders, audio visualisers, cricket stumps, and many more. Each student has taken ownership of their design process and are producing unique solutions.
Year 11 Design & Technology
Our Year 11 students have recently completed their Pallet Product projects—recycling and re-imagining materials into new, functional designs. Finished works included cricket bats, fishing lures, weightlifting benches, side tables, modern wall shelving, and surfboard racks. Each project demonstrated innovation, problem-solving, and a strong commitment to craftsmanship.
Year 7 Digital
In Year 7 Digital Technology, students were introduced to programming and algorithms by building simplified versions of classic arcade games, such as Pong and Pac-Man, to develop core coding concepts and logical reasoning. More recently, the focus has shifted to programming microcontrollers for practical applications. Students have created digital step counters and coded robots to execute specific sequences—such as a choreographed dance—applying their skills in functional contexts.
Year 9/10 Engineering
The Year 9/10 Engineering students have been designing and building CO₂ dragsters, comparing different materials and fabrication methods. Some constructed their vehicles from balsa wood, while others modelled designs in CAD and produced them using 3D printing. Guided by the engineering design process, students investigated factors such as aerodynamics, weight, and structural integrity to determine the most effective approach for their dragster. The fastest dragsters covered 15 metres in just half a second.

Restoring a Classic: Moto Guzzi Project Rolls Into Mullumbimby High
Mullumbimby High School recently received a unique and generous donation—a 2012 Moto Guzzi V7 Classic motorbike, gifted by local community member Peter Dodson.
This iconic bike has a colourful and unexpected history. It was originally gifted to Peter by his godfather, but was later stolen from a property in Murwillumbah. Remarkably, it resurfaced in Brisbane after being involved in an accident. Queensland Police traced the ownership back to Mr Dodson, who was able to retrieve the bike—though it was in very poor condition.
While Peter had considered repairing it himself, time constraints got in the way. A Mullumbimby High staff member suggested the bike could become an exciting hands-on project for students, and Peter agreed it was a perfect fit.
Now, under the guidance of SLSO Brian Hedge, students from the Inclusive Education Faculty as well as other passionate students, are working together to restore the motorbike to its former glory. Along the way, they’re building valuable skills in mechanics, problem-solving, teamwork, and patience.
We look forward to sharing updates on this exciting restoration journey—and eventually unveiling the finished product!

Cairo with Gabi have been preparing and sitting the Hospitality exam. Rosie and Lumar attended the Year 12 Pizza party as part of the end of year celebrations. There was some birthday celebrations, cooking classes and visits to the Byron Wildlife Centre.
Outdoor Education Camp
Stepping out of your comfort zone was the name of the game! Year 9 outdoor education students travelled to Lake Arragan in week 9 to enjoy the great outdoors and push themselves in some challenging conditions. Who needs a phone when you are in such a beautiful environment and with great mates?
Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA)
Musical Highlights
Term Three at Mullumbimby High School has been bursting with creativity, collaboration, and outstanding performances. Our students have continued to impress with their musical growth, both in the classroom and on stage, sharing their talents with the school community in remarkable ways.
Year 7 students have been busy learning about instruments in all their forms. From exploring how they are played to understanding their classifications, students even took on the challenge of building their own homemade instruments. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have made for an inspiring journey into the foundations of music-making.
Year 8 delved into the world of film and sound, learning the art of Foley and the role of music in storytelling. They created imaginative soundscapes for silent films, bringing scenes to life in unique and entertaining ways. Their creativity has highlighted how sound and vision combine to capture emotion and atmosphere in film.
Our Elective music classes have been hard at work refining their performance skills. Whether rehearsing solo works, collaborating in small ensembles, or arranging new repertoire, these students have demonstrated dedication, discipline, and artistic flair. Their efforts throughout the term were evident in every performance opportunity, raising the bar for excellence within our Music Department.
The undisputed highlight of the term was the CAPA Showcase in Week 8. This extraordinary event brought together the incredible talents of our Creative and Performing Arts students across music, art, drama, and dance. The showcase was nothing short of spectacular, with each performance radiating energy, confidence, and creativity. From breathtaking musical pieces to powerful theatrical moments, our students truly shone on stage. The atmosphere was electric as families, staff, and the wider community celebrated the achievements of our young performers. The dedication, teamwork, and courage on display made us immensely proud, and we extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making the night such a resounding success.
With such a triumphant Term Three behind us, excitement is building for what lies ahead. Our students continue to inspire with their passion, and we can’t wait to see where their musical journeys take them next.
CAPA Showcase 2025 of all creative talents
Students from across all years showcased their creative talents and expression in Art, Film, Photography, Drama and Music performances. All of year 7 and 8 contributed work towards the showcase as well as the elective classes in CAPA. With year 11 performing the play 'A Life of the Insects' which ran for 4 shows. HSE Visual Art showcased their major works which have now been submitted for marking. A range of students including year 12 performed in the music showcase, professionally MC'd by Scarlett and Lucas who took on roles as the hosts of Radio MHS FM (99.9). Thanks again for those who performed, contributed, volunteered and attended.
Year 6 CAPA Experience Day
CAPA hosted Year 6 students from local schools in a sneak preview of the Showcase performances. Year 6 visitors were hosted by Year 10 Art students as they walked through the Art Exhibits, they also voted on the Archibimby Peoples' Choice Prize (Year 10 Portraiture Prize). On this High School experience day, students attended the final rehearsal of the Music performance and finally visited a Drama workshop led by Year 9 Drama students. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the teachers who accompanied them, thank you to those teachers for bringing your students and celebrating the Creative and Performing Arts with us.
Excursion to SWELL for art students
The elective Visual Art, Film and Photography ventured up to Currumbin last week to see the annual SWELL Sculpture Exhibition. Students had a wonderful day, enjoying the incredible public artworks. SWELL champions local, national, and international artists, welcoming creatives from all Australian states and territories, and across the globe, right on our doorstep. The insightful works were inspirational, motivating students and filling their heads with ideas for their own artworks.
Drama Showcase ‘The Life of the Insects’
Year 11 Drama students presented ensemble performances of ‘The Life of the Insects’, September 5th – 7th to highly appreciative community audiences.
The Insect Play, written by Josef and Karel Capek, first opened in Prague in 1922 and is perhaps one of the most beautifully imagined plays of the 20th Century. Absurd, witty, joyful and inventive, this moving, satirical drama reflects deeper themes of existence, nature and the human condition. A plea for self-understanding and compassion, it remains as timely today as it was then, when the world felt the same dismay over wars fought and peace too easily lost.
Thank you to our community
Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful artists who joined us: Ken Naughton, for your exquisite music and rhythms, Carissa Cox, for your playful, quirky, and elegant costumes. Bobbie Rossini-Sainsbury, for your ambient, atmospheric lighting designs. Thank you, Beck and Matt Marshall from Baker & Daughters, Mullumbimby, for donating your divine banquets and nourishing our community. Michelle from our school café, for your trays of sweet treats. Amanda from Dancing Pixie, Byron Bay, for your beautiful giant paper flowers. Sean, Alex and friends from North Coast Events for our incredible staging. Jeff Dawson and Aslan Shand from the Byron Shire Echo, for promoting our efforts. Our families, friends, teaching, office, cleaning, executive and support staff. It takes a community to create a show.
Science
Marine Studies
Yr 11 Marine Studies students completed their Open Water SCUBA course this term at Nguthungulli (Julian Rocks). The course consisted of a day in the pool to get used to all the equipment and 4 ocean dives swimming with the local marine life.
Crime Story Workshop for Year 9 Forensic Science Extension
On Thursday 24th and Friday 25th July, Year 9 students at Mullumbimby High School participated in a two-day Crime Story Workshop, marking the conclusion of their Forensic Science Extension Unit studied in term 2.
The workshop immersed students in a real-world simulation of criminal investigation. Across two days, they were presented with two separate crime scenes and a range of evidence, requiring them to work collaboratively in teams to analyse findings and build a strong case. Their investigative process included:
- Examining and recording evidence
- Making observations and drawing inferences
- Interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects
- Connecting multiple scenes and identifying offenders
- Presenting findings in a mock trial
Students explored key forensic techniques, including fingerprinting, DNA analysis, ballistics, and crime scene examination, building on the practical skills developed during the class’s Forensic Fridays sessions in Term 2.
A unique feature of the workshop was the “scrum down” sessions, which encouraged students to step back from the evidence and engage in open discussion and critical thinking. These sessions promoted collaboration, communication, and unbiased analysis, all essential skills for both forensic science and broader life contexts. The workshop concluded with a mock trial, where students presented their cases, connecting suspects to the crime using logical reasoning and the evidence they had meticulously gathered.
Ekka Excursion
On 12 August 2025, 80 students from our Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 agriculture classes travelled to the Ekka as part of a school field trip. The group explored a range of educational exhibits, from animal and produce displays where they viewed prize-winning livestock to fresh produce and agricultural displays relevant to their studies. Students also toured the farm machinery and tools pavilion, inspecting modern tractors, fencing equipment and other agricultural technology, which linked directly to topics covered in class.
Transforming the Greenhouse
In the afternoon, the students enjoyed some of the Ekka’s recreational attractions, including rides, games and show bags. They also attended several entertainment displays, such as working dog demonstrations, horse riding events and woodchopping competitions. The excursion gave students a chance to see real-world examples of agricultural practices while also experiencing the excitement of Queensland’s largest annual show.
This year, an unused space on the school farm has been transformed into a thriving greenhouse. The project was designed to give students hands-on experience with nursery-based skills, turning what was once an underutilised area into a learning hub.
Inside the greenhouse, students are now practicing plant propagation and learning to care for a diverse range of species. Succulents, ferns, bulbs, stag horns and other shade-loving plants are being cultivated, providing a practical way for students to develop their knowledge of plant growth, care and commercial production techniques. The initiative not only enhances the school’s Agriculture Program but also equips students with valuable, real-world horticultural skills.
