Canbury School Newsletter 9th JANUARY 2026. ISSUE 387

Head's Welcome

Dear Families, Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It has been wonderful to see our students returning with such energy, and we have jumped straight back into the full swing of things here at Canbury. Despite the freezing temperatures and the lovely sprinkling of snow, the school has been a hive of activity. We began the week with a focus on staff training. Our team took part in a very informative session on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), delivered by the experts at Brook. Providing our students with high-quality, sensitive, and age-appropriate guidance in this area is a priority for us. We look forward to discussing this further with you at our upcoming Coffee Morning later this term; stay tuned for the date! It has also been great to see our enrichment clubs resume. A special mention must go to our Skiing Group, who returned with glowing reports and huge smiles. They clearly had a fantastic time on the dry slopes! Do take a moment to look at the photos further down in this edition to see them in action. Thank you for ensuring your children are wrapped up warm for the current weather. Here’s to a productive and exciting term ahead. Mrs Rich Head

What we've been up to

SNOW!

We've been enjoying the snow this week whilst also trying to keep warm! Here are some pictures of our fun.

Ski Club

The countdown to the 2026 Canbury Ski Trip is on! Students started their after-school ski sessions this Wednesday at the Oakwood dry slope in Esher. Under the tutelage of two instructors our 12 students got to grip with the basics, and had a great time in the process. They'll be carving up the Italian slopes in no time!

Science

There have been some fun experiments this week. We have had Y9's identifying nutrients in foods, using food test chemicals. Y7 have then been exploring diffusion with skittles and tea bags. As well having fun looking at the properties of waves with slinkies - which has brought back some great 90s memories for many of us!

Music Assembly

We were thrilled to welcome Martin and Delia from Melbury Music in our assembly this week. We learnt about jazz music and all had a wonderful time being cheered up from the weather with their fantastic piano playing and singing. They treated us by singing: - Fly me to the moon - Le Vie en Rose - On the street where you live - Say a little prayer Plus we had a special guest appearance from Nico who sang 'I'm a believer" which we all absolutely loved! Thank you to Martin and Delia for coming to see us! We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Master Furniture Builders

Well done and thank you to Reenie and Mr Fairbrass for building some new office furniture for us. We hear Sam, Ethan, Judah and Mr McGregor were excellent directors!

Lego Club

Danai, Daisy, Archie and Mrs Milestone had lots of fun this week at Lego club - building our own creations and continuing our work on Central Perk from Friends.

Christmas Tree

We were also pleased to hear that our school Christmas tree had an extended life after the end of term as we donated it to Staywell Services in New Malden. We were delighted to see the residents enjoying some music around the tree

Cold Weather

Please make sure you send your child in with a waterproof coat as the weather is looking very mixed over the next few weeks. Students will not be allowed out in the playground without suitable clothing, especially if it is raining/ sleeting/snowing.

Snow

We are keeping a close eye on the weather in regard to snow and although there is a chance of this towards the end of the week it looks to be very little snow fall if it does appear. In any event of the school closure due to adverse weather, you will be notified that morning via email, the WhatsApp group and on the School website home page.

Named Reusable Water Bottles

Please make sure you send your child in with a named reusable water bottle each day. Students can fill this up once empty from our water cooler by the science corridor at break, lunch times and the end of the day.

Uniform

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you all of our expectations regarding school uniform. Maintaining high standards of uniform is an important part of our school's identity and helps to foster a positive, focused, and equitable learning environment for all students. We expect all students to be in school uniform every day. The only exception to this is when students are participating in PE or Games lessons, during which the PE/Games kit must be worn. Attached is the recently simplified uniform expectations list. As a school, we have taken the decision to buy in some new spare pieces of commonly misplaced/forgotten items of uniform that we will loan to a student on a day that they forget such an item. We will be implementing the following from the first day back in January. Please note that if a student loses or damages any loaned uniform, it must be replaced. The cost of replacement will be added to termly invoices. The only permitted items of outerwear to be worn over school uniform is the official school blazer or the official school hoodie. Any other form of jacket, or non-uniform outerwear will be asked to be removed by staff - if a student is feeling cold, they will be offered a school-owned item of uniform (e.g., a spare school hoodie) to borrow for the day. If any families have Canbury green hoodies or black V-neck jumpers that are too small for their child but are still in good, useable condition, we kindly ask you to send these items in. These donations would be greatly appreciated as they will help us build up our stock of spare items for student use. We understand that a few students have specific circumstances requiring an adjustment to the standard uniform. This communication does not affect those who have already established an agreed amended uniform agreement with the school. This will have been discussed and formally agreed upon with you already. If you would like to discuss any uniform adaptions, please contact your child's form tutor. We kindly ask for your full support in ensuring your child returns to school in January fully prepared and in the correct uniform. Please note that branded uniform is bought from Stevensons. You can buy either in person from their store or online. Our cooperation helps us to dedicate our time to teaching and learning, rather than uniform enforcement.
