Prep School Newsletter Friday 17 May 2024

Year 5 are having a splendid time on their residential trip to Norfolk. We have missed them this week and look forward to hearing about their exciting adventures on their return. Year 6 pupils are working exceptionally hard on their upcoming production, Alice in Wonderland. Tickets are now available to all year groups, so be sure to secure your seats for this wonderful performance. Please find the link in the Newsletter below.

On Monday 20 May, we will be capturing our annual sport and class photos. We kindly ask that children come to school looking neat and tidy in their summer uniforms, with their PE kit in their bags, ready for the Sports photos; please could you ensure all items are clearly marked to prevent any losses!

What happened in School this week?

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, over 750 children aged 7 to 11 from local schools participated in the Knight Frank Schools Triathlon. This unique sporting event, organized by Restless Development, brought young athletes together in teams of four. The challenge? Completing relays of swimming, cycling, and running. Their efforts weren’t just about personal achievement; they were also raising funds for Restless Development and hundreds of local charities. All participants raised money in different ways and Bea in Year 3 also organised a bake sale during break time to raise money for this fantastic cause.

Tickets on sale now!

We warmly invite all our families to the much anticipated Year 6 Production of Alice in Wonderland, held in the Countess of Wessex Theatre on Thursday 23 May at 7pm.

Forest Explorers

Forest Explorers have had a busy week. We have been learning about the lifecycle of a frog and had lots of fun making some pretend frogspawn using chai seeds and water. We now know that frogs are amphibians and live on land and the water.

Reception

This week in Reception we have had lots of fun with our Design Technology project. We began the week by practicing cutting with different types of scissors and then joining parts of a flower together, deciding between different types of glue and tape. Then each of the children designed their own castle and showed their design to the class, talking about the different materials and resources they were going to use. The children enjoyed making their castles, trying to stick to their design, and finding different ways to join pieces together. Finally, the children painted and decorated their castles. They are so proud of their results!

Year 1

Year 1 enjoyed reading with Year 4 and Year 6 children this week as our Year 5 buddies departed for their trip to Norfolk. The children read beautifully to their partners

Year 2

On Monday morning, Year 2 set sail from Southampton and experienced their first day on board the Titanic. First class passengers were lucky enough to use the first ever heated swimming pool on board a ship, Turkish baths and squash courts and spent their day in luxury. Passengers in second class had facilities such as a spacious outdoor promenade, a library and dining room. Afternoon tea and coffee was served in the library. Third class passengers had a much more basic set up with very few facilities, but passengers still enjoyed a high level of luxury compared to other liners of the day. At the end of the day, all of Year 2 sat down to their first meal on board. Once they had devoured dinner, they danced the night away...

Year 3

Bea in Year 3 spent last weekend making over 100 cakes and biscuits to raise money for Restless Development. She made a huge variety of tasty treats including gluten-free brownies, red velvet cookies and cupcakes. She raised lots of money for this excellent cause. Well Done Bea!

Year 4

This week 4B have been creating a menu for the Iron Man, the character they have been reading about in their class text. They combined ideas of metal objects and foods, created some descriptive phrases and then put it in to Bing’s image creator. With a bit of AI magic their dish was created. They then used these images to write and create adverts in the style of a well known brand.

Another highlight of the week has been DT Week. 4B have been designing and making cars. First they built a chassis, then explored the ideas of aerodynamics, which may have influenced their designs (some still wanted a less aerodynamic horse box). They then created a design for the car’s body and carefully measured out and created the body. The final stage was piecing the net together and fixing it the chassis. The class thoroughly enjoyed the project and it was great to see their confidence and skill levels develop using saws and glue guns.

A postcard from Year 5 ......

Dear Parents, we are having the best time on our Norfolk Residential Trip. We are learning so much with the outdoor adventures and every day is filled with laughter! The highlight of our trip was the infamous mud walk, which took place under the gentle sunshine at Blakeney Point. It is truly an unforgettable experience and we cannot wait to tell you all about it! Year 5

Year 6

Freshly returned from an amazing week at PGL, Year 6 have thrown themselves back into life at school.

They have been thinking about what an ideal playground would look like for their contribution to the design and technology week and so far, the plans include treehouses with reading sheds at the top, zip wires, climbing walls and adventure play structures! The next step is to create a careful ariel view before they start to build a model of it: watch this space!

Rehearsals for the Year 6 production have stepped up and everyone has been working hard. Lines are almost perfect, songs are coming together and the set is taking shape. The children are extremely excited and are hoping that everyone remembers to buy their tickets for next Thursday.

Some of our AIMS pupils attended a fascinating talk given by Mrs Hill on the application of maths in our everyday lives. They heard about the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler solving the Konigsberg Bridge problem, Eulerian graphs, isomorphic graphs (an example of which you can see on the screen behind the children) and were challenged to solve the problem below.
