Johnston Community Primary School Friday 22nd March 2024

Dear parents/guardians,

We have come to the end of what has been a very short Spring Term. We have concluded the term with an area of curriculum that we have been working hard to develop, our REAL (Rigorous, Engaging, Authentic, Learning) Curriculum. At the end of each topic pupils are provided with the choice of how they will undertake a project. For example, in year five where pupils have been learning about the rainforest, a group decided to write to Pembrokeshire County Council to request that they reduce the use of palm oils. In year four, another group created an information documentary about plastics in the oceans.

Thire projects are distinctly different from lessons in other weeks because pupils are required to use the knowledge, skills and experiences that they have gained to choose how they will take action. We feel that the week has been a roaring success and we look forward to sharing more of these projects with you in the future.

Bingo Night!

Thank you to the Friends of the School who do all of the organisation for our Bingo evening. Together, we managed to raise around £500 for our school. Diolch!

Ascona Group - Library Donation

Thank you to the Ascoa group who have donated £1500 towards the continued development of our reading resources. We are going to use the money to develop our 'Core Book Offer', an area which I am very passionate about. As well as working on pupils fluency, it is also important that they listen and discuss stories that are above their reading age. This supports them to vizualise a story and check their understanding of what they are listening to. Our Core Book offer is about creating sets of books for each year group which pupils will listen to with the teacher. Each pupil is provided with a book to listen along and follow the text. Then, at the end of each session we use high order questioning to discuss the text.

Pasg Hapus!

Finally, I would like to wish families a happy Easter and I look forward to enjoying the warmer weather with pupils. We return to school on Tuesday 9th April.

Best wishes,

Mr. Williams.

Gymnastics Success for George

Attendance Reminder

Well done to year five who achieved 96% attendance this week. You are our best class this week.

Don't forget the really useful guidance provided by the NHS: Is my child too ill for school?

This will help you make a decision about whether to keep a child off school or send them in. Please remember that minor coughs and colds should not prevent a child from coming into school.

This time of year is really exciting and busy. If children miss school they are not only missing learning, but often will miss lots of our special events and activities, which makes them feel left out.
