Cowbridge Lower School Newsletter 31.01.25

We've ended January with a bang, celebrating Chinese New Year throughout the week! We have also had parental engagement sessions in both Nursery and Year 1... a big diolch yn fawr to all the parents, siblings and grandparents who came to join in the fun!

Nursery have had a very red and gold week learning all about Chinese New Year, their classroom was full of special red and gold resources to enhance their learning... a firm favourite was definitely the red and yellow rice!

Nursery had so much fun showing their family around their classroom and outside area. It was really well attended, thank you to our families for coming in! We hope you enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year with us!

Reception have also focussed on Chinese New Year. They read the story about the animal race, made their own Chinese dragon and had a go at writing Chinese numbers and letters.

Using the story, they practiced their ordinal numbers all the way to 12th place and started counting in 10's. They have been practicing their coin recognition in their Siop Dillad and eating some yummy fortune cookies... blasus iawn!

Year 1 started their week inviting their families in to join their Cowbridge Farmer's Market! Last week they planned the 'stalls' they wanted to share with their families and what we would need and then when everyone came in, they could show off their skills! Thank you to all our families for coming in!

In readiness for their trip to Cardiff Castle next week, they learnt all about the parts of the castle and why castles were built the way they were. They made a success criteria of all how you would make a strong castle... just in case the King needs to build one at any point! They designed their own castle using the success criteria and have decided they would like to make it on Minecraft next week!

Year 1 found out that the tallest tower is on Warwick Castle and it is 39m tall. They wanted to find out how tall that was so they measured it out on the playground using the trundle wheel. They also helped Mrs Davies build a castle that they could play with in class, it's a good job they were there to guide, as it was a fiddly job!

The rest of the week has been spent learning about Chinese New Year, the year of the snake. The children made new year cards, snakes and lanterns to share with their families at home. They also wrote some sentences about what they had learnt about Chinese New Year, their sounding out was amazing!

Frau Powlson came down to teach Reception and Year 1 all about German food names. As always, a big danke for your time creating amazing resources!
