Reading Girls' School newsletter - 24 may 2024

Principal's message:

Firstly, after such a busy half-term, I wanted to start by wishing you and the students a restful half-term holiday. I hope you are keeping abreast of all the events that have been taking place in the school through the school newsletters. Many of our students have been involved in various activities. Our Year 11s are in the midst of their GCSEs and are coping exceptionally well with what is being demanded of them. I wish them in particular a restful week, amongst the revision they will be doing.

As we continue to work hard to maintain a positive and focused learning environment, I would kindly remind you of the importance of adhering to our uniform expectations. I know there have been some challenges to obtaining new pieces of uniform, but Stevensons have now opened up a new shop close to Reading town centre. Their new store is located at 4 Chatham Place, Reading RG1 7AZ.

From 15th July to 18th August they will be open exclusively for pre-booked appointments Monday to Friday. They will be open for walk in customers on Saturdays and from 19th August to 1st September they will be open Monday to Sunday. For more information about their extended opening hours, please visit their website, www.stevensons.co.uk.

May I wish you all a restful week.

Marika Farrugia, Principal

Principal's Surgery is held every Friday 8.15 – 9.00am.

University of Reading Scholars

We have been given a wonderful opportunity to work with the University of Reading to produce a research poster on our desired topic. We have visited the University on multiple occasions where we were informed via presentation format on how to efficiently compose an educational poster.

On our first visit, we received an introduction to what the overall event consisted of. We went to the University of Reading and met with ambassadors who developed our knowledge further on the important study skills needed to achieve a 1st in our individual dissertation projects; These include referencing and avoiding plagiarism, synthesising information and how to develop and structure a fair argument. Overall, we enjoyed the process of creating our poster and we learned many skills necessary for university, an example being how to citate articles. We are extremely grateful and appreciative to the University of Reading and Miss Thomson for organising this event and we are very excited for the graduation of this programme!

Reading Schools' Athletics Championships

RGS fielded a big team for the combined Year 8/9 competition and Y10 competition.

On the track we had students competing in 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m and 1,500m. For the field events we had students competing in High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, and Discus.

A huge well done to all the team for their efforts in their events, their behaviour in the stands and congratulating students from other schools when medals were awarded. You are a credit to RGS, well done.

A particular mention to our finalists and medal winners.

Macie went on to win the Gold medal in the Y10 Javelin

Amera won the Silver medal in the Y10 High Jump

Lizzy won the Silver medal in the Year 10 Discus

Kathy won the Bronze medal in the Year 10 Long Jump

Andreea C won the Bronze medal in the Year 10 1,500m

Adaeze in Y9 won the Bronze medal in her age group competition for Shot Put.

After half term, we have the Year 7 and 8 Athletics League and later in June, the Year 7 only Reading Schools' Championships.

Year 7s were using rubbish to create new useful objects in the context of the future without waste in STEM lessons this week.
