2023 PMI Nova Scotia Scholarship recipient

Sean, IT Programming, Institute of Technology Campus

"To pay for my education and living expenses, I currently work as security at a children's healthcare facility, as a reservist member of the Canadian Armed Forces, as a contractor for various garden tasks for local residents, and I sell produce and worm castings that I produce in my living room. This is all to say that I wear a fair number of hats to make ends meet, and I work rather hard to do so, yet they still barely meet. This award will give me some padding in my budget, and maybe enable me to say 'No' to a last-minute 12 hour night shift before exam season, or help me pay for an inevitable unforeseen expense that would otherwise go unpaid/take away from other areas within my budget. It provides flexibility where there otherwise was little, and relieves some of the stress that goes along with this. This hasn't solved all of my problems by any means, but it has given me space to breathe and focus on my education rather than whether or not I can make rent this month."

"I'm a recent undergrad of SMU and current student of NSCC’s IT Programming program. I am also a military reservist, an avid collector of eclectic skills, and an aspiring project management professional (designation and field).

Initially, I chose to attend NSCC out of a need to find employment; I had graduated and couldn't find a job without a 3-5 year experience requirement. While I felt that I was equipped to work in these positions, I also realized that I had to be flexible to ensure long-term success. I have a background in programming and enjoy IT, so I thought it logical to learn more about it.

While looking at my program's syllabus I saw that project management was a skill in the curriculum and wanted to learn more about it. Just over a year later I have a certificate in project management from Google, among other related educational undertakings, and the desire to write the CAPM exam shortly before/after next semester's exam period. I'm not just saying that because of PMI's generous award, but to state that I have a genuine interest in project management as a career.

I can only hope that I can give back as much as I have been given. I hope to interact more with PMI in future events and that I can soon contribute to their success."

Thank you for your generous support of NSCC students! Together, we're transforming Nova Scotia one learner at a time!
