Welcome to the October 2025 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Connecting homes
Our contract works have finally been completed at Tolldish Hall Farm, near Coventry. The site will be able to generate 25MW of electricity, enough to power over 7,000 homes. Tolldish Hall Farm solar project will support the UK’s transition to Net Zero and increase the use of renewable energy through supporting the availability of energy to the National Grid.
This month we completing the finishing works to the substation compound which included the installation of concrete steps, GRP handrails and landscaping around the buildings.
Going underground
During October works have progressed well at our major renewal energy project at Norwich. We have completed the installation of ducting from the new BESS facility to the National Grid 400kV main substation.
This involved crossing several special engineering difficulties (SED) including a railway bridge and several UKPN 132kV circuits. While the final duct installation was being completed, our experienced cable installation teams have been installing the single core 630mm² & 1000mm² HV cables along the route to ensure we complete our contract works to programme.
On the National Express
Works commenced this month at National Express Bus Depot in Wolverhampton to install EV chargers and the associated infrastructure. These works have been programmed in four phases and will eventually give the depot access to 25no. double chargers giving charging capability for 50no EV buses.
Works within phase 1a have progressed well with the completion of the first 10no. EV plinths together with their individual Armco protection pads.
We have also completed the HV/TX transformer plinth and LV/DB plinths in readiness for the delivery and installation of the associated transformer and LV/DB container in early November.
On the road again
Following the successful pre-construction monitoring of the M4 motorway, the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) has commenced this month where we will be drilling 3no. bores under M4 Motorway near Chippenham. Monitoring for movement of the motorway road surface will continue throughout the HDD works.
The HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) process is a three-stage trenchless method for installing underground pipelines and cables. First, a pilot hole is drilled along the desired path using a drill head. Next, the hole is enlarged through a reaming process to the required diameter. Finally, the pipeline or cable is pulled back through the enlarged bore.
Roadside working
October saw works commence on a busy section of Palmers Green, North London where we are installing a dual circuit 11kV supply for the Arriva Bus depot.
Firstly, hand dug trial holes were completed to expose existing services and find a route through a highly congested footpath before our vacuum excavator was put into action and trenching work began.
Working to restricted hours, we have managed to keep the traffic flowing safely on a very busy road and keep the buses running on time.
100% achievement!
ISO 9001 - Reaccreditation
Back in 2012 we made the decision to strengthen our processes, increase customer satisfaction and grow our revenue. ISO certification was our choice of investment. Since gaining this accreditation the company has gone from strength to strength and have never looked back.
On our recent annual audit during October we passed with flying colours, with no non-compliances raised and 25 positive observations from the auditor. As a company we are proud of this and wanted to share the positive feedback.
Although we have achieved 100% on the audit, this doesn’t mean we will take a pause. As a company we strive for continuous improvement and are currently working towards our ISO 45001 accreditation, and eager to gain this by the end of the year. Watch this space!
Out with the old...
At the beginning of October we took delivery of a new Takeuchi TB260 excavator, replacing a Lydon excavator that had clocked up over 5k hours. Following operator feedback and reliability of the old machine, we decided to continue the Takeuchi theme.
Cheering on our MD in the New York Marathon!
We’re all incredibly proud of our Managing Director, Brian Lydon, who has been in New York this month, running the world-famous TCS New York City Marathon.
The New York Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors and attracts over 50,000 runners from more than 150 countries each year. The 26.2-mile route winds through all five boroughs of New York City - from Staten Island to Central Park - making it one of the most iconic and challenging races in the world. Brian completed the run in 3hrs, 52mins and 16sec. An amazing achievement!
