LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the November 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Power of the sun

Lydon Contracting have been appointed to undertake the civil engineering and construction works to bring in the power supply to facilitate the installation of a 49.9MW solar and storage farm, known as Crimscote Solar Farm near Stratford Upon Avon.

During November, we have completed the reduced dig to levels and constructed the 66kV & 33kV transformer bunds, 66kV voltage transformer and Disconnector bases for the IDNO compound.

During December we will be undertaking the installation of the compound ducting, drainage, cable pits and access road works.

We will also be installing 720 meters of 66kv Cable for the incoming supply from the 66kv overhead lines to the DNO Compound.

On the flight path

November saw us complete phase 2 and 3 of the cable installation at Stansted North. We have now installed c.5.2 km of dual circuit 33kV and pilot cable with the remaining 2.3km planned for 2025 once the remainder of the duct installation is completed.

We also excavated and joined the remaining ducts and cables from Lindsey Road to Rye Street working weekends to minimise traffic disruption into Bishop’s Stortford.

Connecting businesses

During November we commenced works at a site in Pitstone, Buckinghamshire to install the offsite HV ducting to feed a new commercial development.

In addition to the off-site works we will continue in December to construct 2no HV package substation bases.

On the move!

Now something a little different! We outgrew our existing office building some time ago and were due to commence construction of our new office back in 2020 however the global Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to this and we have been supplementing our office accommodation with portacabins ever since. However, on our 25th year anniversary we are now progressing with the new office building!

The target is to complete the building for May 2025 which when complete will provide accommodation for up to thirty people including meeting and training rooms. The new roof will also provide an opportunity to include solar panels with battery storage facilities. The final specification of the Heat and ventilation is being designed but we plan for the office to be heated and cooled using an air source heat pump. External parking will also include charging for electric vehicles as we transition to cleaner modes of transport.

Next stop - Birmingham

Works in November have seen the installation and jointing of the dual HV circuits from Aldridge Road Primary Substation to the National Express Substation along Aston Lane in Birmingham.

This will now allow NGED and our client to start the process of energisation and programme the commissioning of the recently installed EV chargers inside the National Express bus depot.

Tash-tastic for Movember!

Over the years Lydon Contracting have had great success in fund raising and raising the awareness of Men’s Health during the month of November. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach out and support men.

Alongside the team growing some impressive moustaches we hosting an evening of Quingo where friends, family and valued supply chain partners enjoyed an evening of Bingo and Quizzing. Investing in quality equipment

In the last couple of days of November we were delighted to take delivery of 4no. brand new MAN TGE 3.160 panel vans. Fitted with full width LED beacons, rear view cameras, tow bars and access steps. These vans have a very driver friendly comfortable cabin with digital displays, air conditioning, cruise control, wireless phone charger point, all the mod cons!

These are fresh from the factory and still going through the finishing touches in our workshop having the graphics applied, racking installed, security deadlocks fitted before being kitted out to go to work.

Tell us about yourself, what do you like doing in your spare time?

Travelling is my passion and, at the last count, have visited 64 countries to date, with the most noteworthy one being in 2006 when I was one of only 200 authorised foreign visitors to visit North Korea.

When I’m not on a plane I spend most weekends pursuing my other passion of photographing aircraft, trains, cars (…or anything with an engine) whilst enjoying my CAMRA membership and trying various real ales from across the home nations. I’ve been an avid supporter of the mighty Aston Villa for four decades now and my only encounter with someone famous came in 1983 when Peter Withe, who scored the winning goal in their 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich, came to my school and signed my football socks…..they’ve never been washed since!
