Microsoft: Inside the world's most powerful AI Data Center

Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin - Microsoft is introducing a new generation of AI-focused supercomputing datacenters around the world, including their Wisconsin Fairwater site, their largest and most sophisticated AI factory to date.

Being built by Walsh Construction, the new Fairwater AI Data Center is a remarkable feat of engineering that offers a unique, purpose-built facility for AI training and running large-scale artificial intelligence applications and models. The new data center includes three massive buildings that are a combined 1.2 million square feet that covers 315 acres of land. Construction of this center required nearly 47 miles of foundation piles, over 26 million pounds of structural steel, 120 miles of medium-voltage underground cabling and 72.6 miles of mechanical piping, a massive engineering achievement for crews.

Fairwater was designed to work as one massive AI supercomputer designed to deliver ten times the performance of the world’s fastest supercomputer today, enabling AI training and inference workloads at a level never seen. This data center will serve as Microsoft’s primary U.S. AI Datacenter, anchoring its global network of AI facilities.

Walsh Construction installs bridge beams at I-69 Ohio River Crossing

Evansville, Indiana - Walsh Construction and Traylor Bros., Inc. are building three new concrete bridges: a 3,911-foot, 21-span floodplain bridge and two ramp bridges tying into I-69. All part of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing.

The beams for the ramp bridges are a mix of depths: 48 in., 60 in. and 72 in. Lengths vary from 125 ft to 163 ft. Prestressed concrete was chosen over steel for all of the beams during early planning, the longest beams measure 188-feet-long. In total, more than 80,000 linear feet of piling, about 15 miles, plus massive amounts of concrete and reinforcement are being installed to support the foundations.

“We have a four-beam girder line, cast in place, with a concrete deck. The beams themselves are precast, prestressed lightweight concrete. The beams are long and very complex. They are something that’s not often seen in Indiana or the Midwest.” - Vince Alley, Project Manager at Walsh Construction

East Interchange Builders tackling one of the nation's worst freight bottlenecks

DeKalb County, Georgia - Archer Western and E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. are leading the vital $700 million reconstruction of the I-285 / I-20 East Interchange in DeKalb County, Georgia, noted as one of the nation’s worst bottlenecked areas. Working as East Interchange Builders, crews are delivering:

  • New ramps & flyover bridges - direct alignments and wider lanes to improve safety and reduce weaving
  • 18 additional lane miles - including auxiliary lanes and collector-distributor lanes to smooth traffic flow
  • Noise mitigation - 16 walls covering 800,000-sq-ft to protect surrounding neighborhoods

The improvements will significantly ease traffic congestion through the interchange that resides between Georgia’s two largest cities, Atlanta and Augusta, and feeds into the east side of Atlanta.

“The design-build method allows the schedule to be feasibly managed, because we can work on elements while teams are designing the rest of the project. The approach is unique to GDOT and is working out well for both of us.” - Greg Munna, Senior Project Manager at Archer Western

Located along the border of Orangeburg and Dorchester counties, this project will replace outdated bridges, realign ramps, and improve traffic flow to enhance safety and reduce congestion. The new interchange will provide smoother, safer, and more efficient connections for drivers traveling across the region. Completion is anticipated for late 2027.
