June is here and it makes us smile. It is such a warm, happy month and we have all of our hopes and dreams about how wonderful our summer will be – vacations, no school, family and barbecues, swimming and beaches!
We hope that your summer gets off to a great start and gets even better as it progresses!
Juneteenth
Friday, June 19, 2026
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a Federal Holiday. On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all of the remaining 250,000 slaves in Texas, thus ending slavery in the United States.
This is a day that freedom and equal rights are celebrated in the United States. The celebrations include parades and barbecues and family gatherings but they also include education and time for reflection and understanding and celebrating African American achievements and history.
*****
Town Buildings will be closed at noon on Thursday, June 18th and on Friday, June 19th in observance of the holiday.

JUNE IS PRIDE MONTH
From the Library of Congress (https://www.loc.gov/lgbt-pride-month/about/):
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events.
Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

Food Scrap Recycling Program in New Fairfield
Did you know that the single largest component of solid waste sent to incinerators and landfills is food waste? With nearly 33% of CT’s waste stream consisting of organic materials, there is significant potential to reduce, reuse, and divert a substantial portion of food and organic waste materials from CT’s MSW stream. New Fairfield has installed a “Smart Bin” to provide a more convenient option for dropping off organic waste (food scraps) in front of the Senior Center.
The purpose is to create easy and convenient opportunities for residents to participate in reducing their waste by removing food scraps. You can read more about how the program works by visiting www.hrra.org and clicking on “New Food Scraps SMART BINS” on the left side of the page under “Current Interest.”

HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS
Hurricane Season begins June 1st through November 30th
From CT.gov: What to Do BEFORE a Hurricane
- Have a plan for your family including children, loved ones with special needs and pets . The Connecticut Guide to Emergency Preparedness has information on how to plan for an emergency. It is available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, traditional Chinese, Haitian Creole, Polish and Vietnamese.
- Have an emergency kit ready at all times. Your kit should include food, water, first aid supplies, battery-powered radio, flashlight, and other emergency supplies. You can learn more about building an emergency supply kit in the Connecticut Guide to Emergency Preparedness.
- Learn the evacuation routes and where the designated shelters will be in your area in case you have to evacuate. Contact your local emergency management office or American Red Cross chapter, and ask for the community hurricane preparedness plan. This plan should include information on the safest evacuation routes and nearby shelters.
- Check with your insurance company about your homeowners' insurance. Some may not cover flooding during a hurricane. Take photos of your home and its contents. For more information on preparing your home and making sure you have the right insurance coverage for a disaster, visit the Connecticut Department of Insurance .
- Make plans to secure your property . Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8" marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
- Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
- Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well-trimmed.
- Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
- Determine how and where to secure your boat.
- Consider building a safe room .
- Make sure your car's gas tank is full of gas in case you have to evacuate.

IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, PLEASE SIGN UP FOR THE EVERBRIDGE ALERT SYSTEM SO THAT YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED OF ANY ALERTS!
In 2024, the Town moved from Alert Now to Everbridge for town wide emergency alerts. Unfortunately, we have become aware that most contact information did not transfer properly from the old system to the new one. As a result, we are only reaching about 700 contacts with each message sent, compared to about 5,000 contacts reached with Alert Now. The Town’s ability to communicate information about weather, shelter and storm recovery to our residents is critical. If you have not already signed up for Everbridge, please go to www.newfairfield.org and click on the “Sign up for Emergency Alerts” button on the homepage. (Tip: to view the desktop version of the website on your mobile device, turn your device to the horizontal position).
