Head's Reflections

It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the half-term break, but as the old saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun”, and fun has certainly been in plentiful supply at Kent College over the past few weeks. Of course, it’s been paired with lots of hard work too, making for a vibrant and fulfilling start to the academic year.

This morning was a perfect example of the Kent College spirit in action, our Sponsored Walk followed by the ever-popular House Music competition brought the whole school community together for a showcase of challenge, talent and camaraderie. It was a pleasure to see students of all ages tackling the 10km walk with gusto (with a little encouragement, and sugar, from our fantastic Sixth Formers). Spirits stayed high as we moved from muddy boots to music, with Celts, Saxons and Danes all putting on a brilliant show of talent and House enthusiasm. What a fantastic way to round off the half term.

Some of my favourite moments this term have, as always, come from whole-school events that reflect our values, for example respect for our community. A particularly poignant occasion was our commemoration of Sgt Leslie Pidd, the Battle of Britain pilot who died on our school grounds 85 years ago. It was a privilege to honour his sacrifice, and to welcome members of his family to Kent College to share this special moment with us.

Another highlight was our Open Morning, which once again demonstrated the strength of our community. It was wonderful to see students and staff coming together to share what makes Kent College such a special place. From exploding jelly babies in science, to eye dissections, climbing wall challenges and astro masterclasses, the atmosphere was so positive, and I was delighted to welcome a record number of visitors to our Senior School, including boys for the first time.

Looking ahead, excitement is already building for our school production of Anything Goes, with rehearsals in full swing and plenty of behind-the-scenes energy too. We can’t wait to see it all come together on stage.

We’re also very much looking forward to welcoming our Year 11 students and their families to our Sixth Form Information Evening on Wednesday 5th November. It will be a fantastic opportunity to explore the breadth of subjects and pathways available in our Sixth Form, including the exciting introduction of new BTEC qualifications alongside our A Level offering. These new courses will offer students even greater flexibility to tailor their education to their interests, strengths, and future ambitions.

As we head into the break, I hope everyone takes the chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy some well-earned downtime. We also send our very best wishes to the group heading off on the Spanish Trip to Andalusia over the holiday and look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return.

Sponsored Walk

Our annual whole-school Sponsored Walk took place today, and what a day it was. Undeterred by some serious mud, students and staff enthusiastically tackled the 10km route through the beautiful countryside and woods surrounding the school. Along the way, our fantastic Sixth Form marshals kept spirits high with well-earned treats at regular intervals. Everyone returned with muddy boots, big smiles, and an incredible amount raised for our three school charities.

Classics Trip To Hercules

On Wednesday, 15th October, the Classics department took 43 students from Year 8 to Upper Sixth to see the new Westend show, Disney’s Hercules. We took a coach of very excited students and after a smooth journey, we got to see the production. The highlight for many was the performance of the Muses, who are also the best characters in the film. The set and lighting were fantastic, as were the orchestra. Everyone had a great time.

‘It was extravagant.’ – Esmae, Year 9
‘It was fabulous.’ – Violet, Year 9
‘The set design was amazing.’ – Tallulah, Year 11
‘Hades’ boss battle was thrilling.’ – Gisele, Year 11
‘The Muses’ costume changes were incredible.’ – Natasha, Lower Sixth
‘The Muses are fabulous women.’ – Sarah, Lower Sixth

Year 8 Trip to Newhaven and Seaford

On Tuesday, Year 8 visited two coastal locations to explore coastal landforms and processes. The trip allowed students to see wave-cut platforms, cliffs, and sea stacks firsthand and link these features to erosion, transportation, and deposition. Students also consolidated their understanding of longshore drift through practical observations and witnessed beach reprofiling, discussing how this management strategy helps protect the coastline and its benefits. It was a day of hands-on learning, fresh sea air, and new insights, giving students a deeper appreciation of both the power of natural coastal processes and the importance of managing our coastlines.

Year 7 Art

The Year 7's have been continuing on with their tonal study drawings from the artist Felice Casorati. A few of the students have been sketching their own response to his work, whilst others have moved onto creating one tonal response drawing using tracing paper. The outcomes have been so lovely, well done all.

Fridge Magnet Competition

We all have them — those fridge magnets collected from holidays, hobbies, and happy memories. But have you ever thought of your fridge as a miniature art gallery? Now’s your chance! Fridge Fotos invites everyone — students and staff — to celebrate these everyday masterpieces by sending in a well-composed photograph of your fridge.

Prizes will be awarded for Most Magnets, Best Arrangement, Best Photograph, and Best Individual Magnet (the stranger, the better)!

Entries are due by Monday 3rd November — email your photo (clearly named) to dixona@kentcollege.kent.sch.uk. Winning photos may even feature in the News Round Up or a special exhibition in the Art Block before Christmas. And remember… be sure to ask your fridge’s (or washing machine's) permission before taking its picture!

Year 11 GCSE Drama

This week Year 11 showcased their GCSE Drama devised pieces to an audience of Year 10 students and their parents. We were truly impressed by the creativity, commitment, and confidence displayed in their performances. It was inspiring to see such original work brought to life on stage by our performer and design students.

Welcoming a BAFTA Award Winning Director

This week we were delighted to welcome BAFTA award winning director Adam Wimpenny to our Countess of Wessex Theatre. He gave a truly inspirational talk to our Drama scholars, Exhibitions, Aims and Gold Arts Award students about his work, offering a rare insight into the creative process behind bringing a television series from page to screen. Using the period drama Hotel Portofino as a case study, Adam broke down every component from the music, costume, location, design and acting showing how each element contributes to the final screening, under his direction. His talk was truly inspiring and we hope to have the privilege of hosting him again in the near future.

Adam Wimpenny's talk was inspirational and very insightful into the world of directing. I found it very interesting learning about the different locations, colours, costumes, and angles needed to be considered when filming. Having the chance to watch his work was an amazing opportunity! - Sienna, Upper Sixth

Year 7 Pumpkin Competition

On Wednesday, our Year 7 students enthusiastically participated in a pumpkin carving competition. The event was filled with creativity, laughter, and a wonderful sense of camaraderie as the girls brought their spooky Halloween visions to life. Each student contributed, showcasing both imagination and teamwork in crafting their eerie masterpieces.

Computer Science

In Year 7 Computer Science this week, students have been learning about some problem solving techniques in preparation for the BEBRAS Challenge 2025, which will take place after half-term. They have been learning about using scheduling algorithms, tally charts and frequency, identifying patterns and considering how identifying whether a number is odd or even can help us solve a problem.

Celts Bake Sale

The Celts held their cake sale on Wednesday, serving up a fantastic selection of sweet treats to students and staff. Thanks to everyone’s generosity (and appetite), we raised a brilliant amount for our school charities. A big thank you to all who baked, bought, and supported the event.

Alumna Spotlight: Freja (2016–2021)

We’re always proud to share the journeys of our former students, and this month we’re delighted to celebrate the achievements of Freja Edwards, who attended Kent College from 2016 to 2021.

During her time at KC, Freja studied Food Technology with Ms Lusher and completed the prestigious Leiths cookery course under the guidance of Mrs Moore. Both teachers were instrumental in nurturing her passion for the hospitality industry, offering invaluable support as she explored potential university pathways.

With their encouragement, Freja went on to study for a BSc in Bakery and Patisserie at University College Birmingham (UCB), where she spent three happy and enriching years. She graduated in September 2024 and returned home briefly, gaining local work experience while searching for her next step.

In January 2025, Freja moved to London to take up an exciting role as a Pastry Chef in the Bakery section at Claridge’s Hotel. She’s thriving in the role and is enjoying being part of such a renowned establishment—though the 3am starts are certainly a test of dedication! With Claridge’s planning to open a new street-facing bakery in 2026, there are some exciting career development opportunities ahead for Freja. We look forward to seeing where her culinary talents take her next.
