We once again find ourselves at the end of another school year. It has been a busy one full of exciting learning opportunities, fantastic trips, fun events and lot of hard work from all of the children. We are very proud of all they have achieved and the progress they have made.

We hope you all have a fun and safe summer break - please take a look at the safety advice further down this newsletter.

We look forward to seeing you all back in school on Tuesday 3rd September. Please see the map below for the new class locations.

SUMMER FAIR

Wow, what a brilliant afternoon was had by all at the Summer Fair on Tuesday! Thankfully the weather held out too. We would like to say a huge thank you to the Friends of Parkside PTA for all of their hard work in organising such a fantastic event. We would also like to say thank you to all of the stall holders; there was a great variety for visitors to enjoy., We are also grateful to the school staff & pupils for making the crafts and games and staying behind to help.

After expenses, the event raised an amazing £516.06! So perhaps the biggest thank you needs to go to all of you for coming along and supporting the event.

The PTA also raised £150 via the recent non uniform day and £234.03 at the sports days. Over the course of the year they have raised an incredible £2,055.31. This will make a huge difference to the school. Thank you to all involved.

FOND FAREWELLS

There are some staff leaving us this summer, so we would like to take this opportunity to bid them a fond farewell and we are sure you will join us in wishing them well.

We would like to say goodbye and huge good luck to Mrs Stanger, Mrs Hargraves and Mrs Adams, and thank them for all they have done in their time with us.

Mrs Bell and Mrs Critchley are both retiring and will be very much missed. Between the two of them, they have served the Parkside Primary School community for more than 40 years combined so we are extremely grateful for all of their hard work and dedication.

UNIFORM

We know that as the summer holidays start so do thoughts about getting new uniform for September. Please can we take this opportunity to remind you of the uniform policy. You can view this by clicking the button below.

We would like to draw your attention to the section about earrings. Our policy states that earrings must be completely removed for PE lessons. They cannot be taped over and children must be able to remove them themselves. PE equipment is also used at playtimes (such as bats, balls, skipping ropes, hoops). Children will not be permitted to use these whilst wearing earrings.

Jumpers, cardigans and book bags can be purchased from school on ParentPay in the usual way. The office will be open between 8.00am and 2.00pm on Friday 30th August for you to collect any items ordered.

PE kit can be bought from the Uniform Shop on Pasture Road. (Just a reminder that Reception children do not usually start PE sessions until after Christmas, so there is no rush to purchase for those children.)

SPOTLIGHT ON ATTENDANCE 🔦

Please see below the recent attendance data and the overall attendance for the whole school year. 94.88% is unfortunately below where we would like it to be, and a lot of these absences are due to term time holidays.

Looking ahead to next year, please remember absences from school all adds up to a lot of lost learning. Please also be aware that a period of five unauthorised days out of school will incur a penalty notice. Take note of the changes to penalty notices and our updated attendance policy detailed earlier in the newsletter.

Being in school and having the best attendance possible underpins all the many benefits of school for your child, such as their learning, wellbeing and wider development.

The Department of Education has advice on improving attendance - click here to view.

School Attendance is ‘everyone’s business’.

What an absence means for your child?

At primary school level, where pupils missing up to 14 days of school in key stage two are a quarter less likely to achieve level five or above in reading, writing or maths tests than those with no absence.

If you have any concerns regarding attendance please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Greenley, our Safeguarding and Attendance officer here at Parkside Primary School.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

This year's Summer Reading Challenge launches at libraries on Saturday 6th July. This year’s Challenge is all about creativity. From paper weaving to Lego art, bookmark making to puppetry, there’s something for everyone! Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts, and access free activities at the library.

The Summer Reading Challenge important as it helps to prevent the ‘dip’ in reading abilities that many young people experience during their summer holidays while schools are closed, by encouraging reading for pleasure throughout the holidays.

Find out more at the East Riding Libraries webpage here.

TYPE 1 DIABETES

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s own immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes type 1 diabetes although it is not linked to lifestyle factors. There is currently no cure and it cannot be prevented. There are currently around 400,000 people living with type 1 diabetes in the UK and approximately 29,000 of them are children.

The DigiBete website is a place to help young people, families and communities to manage Type 1 Diabetes. DigiBete is a video platform and app, and is a one-stop-shop for young people’s diabetes management. Founded by families living with diabetes, it is a social enterprise funded by NHS England with all content clinically approved by the Diabetes Team at Leeds Children's Hospital.
