Football Opens Campaign with Stunning Victory Over Bantams
As the final fall team to begin their competition season, Colby's Football team proved good things come to those who wait. Facing off against a Trinity team that has been crowned NESCAC Champions in five of the last eight seasons, the Mules stunned the Bantams with a 13-6 victory Saturday on Mayflower Hill.
The Bantams owned the only score of the first half converting their second possession into their first and last points of the game. The Colby and Trinity defenses took center stage the rest of the way taking turns suffocating the pocket, combining for 11 sacks (seven for the Mules) and eight turnovers (five for the Mules).
The tide shifted in Colby's favor near the end of the third quarter as defensive pressure forced an errant pass by the Trinity quarterback that landed in the paws of defensive lineman Montrail Holmes at Trinity's eight-yard line. Holmes used an escort from the rest of his defensive compadres (headline photo) to rumble into the end zone and put the Mules in front for good.
Colby added an offensive score with just under five minutes to play when Antone Moreis capped an eight-play 74-yard drive, putting the Mules up 13-6. The defense took care of the rest, holding Trinity to a combined 18 yards on their next two possessions, capped by a game-sealing interception from Christopher Milmoe to allow Colby to kneel out the clock.
Jack Nye gained 99 yards on seven receptions with six going for first downs, and quarterback Miles Drake fell just shy of 200-yards passing. Defensively, Cooper Bunnell (3.5 sacks) and Jack Mullen (3 sacks) led a relentless defensive line, while four different Mules collected an interception in the contest.
Jack Cosgrove, the Dick McGee Head Coach for Colby Football, celebrated the win in fine fashion as he reached the 150-win milestone. He has 129 wins to his credit as the winningest coach in UMaine Orono history, and the victory over Trinity marked his 21st at the helm of the Mules.
Colby will go on the road Saturday to face a Williams team that defeated Hamilton 24-17 in their opener. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
#17 Volleyball Runs Streak to Nine Straight Ahead of NESCAC Play
With one midweek game and another tri-match on the road, the 17th-ranked Colby Volleyball team ran their win streak to nine matches to open the season.
Taking out Saint Joseph's, Smith, and UMass Dartmouth all with 3-0 sweeps, it wasn't until Colby's matchup with Babson Saturday afternoon that a match extended past three sets all season.
The Mules were stunned by the Beavers at the onset, dropping the first two sets in tight fashion (21-25, 25-27). Colby rallied behind 13 kills from Brady Moseley, nine blocks by Cyanne Jones, and a collective seven aces to fight back and take the final three sets (25-20, 25-21, 15-6).
Colby will take its 9-0 record on the road next weekend to open up NESCAC play at Wesleyan Friday night before facing #7 MIT Saturday in a battle of regional powers.
Men's Soccer Tops USM, Plays to Draw with Tufts
Before heading into a five game road trip, the Mules remained in Waterville this week to host the Huskies and Jumbos.
On Tuesday night, Colby picked up its second win of the season rallying past Southern Maine 2–1. The Huskies jumped ahead midway through the first half, but the Mules answered after the break. Chase Dolinko tied the match in the 53rd minute on an assist from Charlie Scott, before Scott delivered the decisive goal in the 81st minute off a feed from Oliver Daboo. Colby controlled the match offensively with a 21–5 shot advantage.
Right back on Mayflower Hill Saturday, Colby battled Tufts to a hard-fought 0–0 draw. The Jumbos applied steady pressure with 14 shots, but goalkeeper Jackson Magee made five saves to preserve the shutout. The Mules were limited offensively with just one attempt, but held firm defensively for their first clean sheet of the season.
With the results, Colby moves to 2-1-1 overall and will begin its road stretch in Standish Tuesday night against Saint Joseph’s.
Women's Soccer Blanks USM 5-0
Starting off with a 1-0-1 record to begin the season, the Mules looked to keep the middle column at zero welcoming the Huskies and Jumbos to Mayflower Hill.
Colby opened the week in dominant fashion, cruising past Southern Maine 5–0 at home on Tuesday. The Mules wasted no time, scoring twice in the opening 90 seconds. Abigail Jarvi netted her third of the season just 53 seconds in, followed quickly by Ella Caraluzzi’s first of the year. Both scores were assisted by Avery Barton. Sophie DiGrande added another before halftime, while Madison Genser and Amanda Schneider tacked on second-half goals to seal the win. MK Marshall, Sadie Gardner and Talia Thompson split time in net combining for the shutout and eight total saves.
On Saturday, Colby hosted twenty-first ranked Tufts, falling 2–0 despite a strong showing. The Jumbos struck in the 31st minute and again just after halftime to take control. The Mules generated plenty of chances with 19 shots — nine on target — but couldn’t break through. Goalkeeper play was strong on both ends, with Tufts making nine saves and Colby eight.
The split moves Colby to 2-1-1 overall (1-1 in NESCAC) as the team is set to face UNE in Biddeford on Tuesday followed by a conference matchup at Conn. College Saturday.
Field Hockey Tromps Husson
After battling in just one game in the opening week of play, the Mules faced off against three different opponents in a busy week of action.
The Mules opened the week Tuesday night with a tight 2–1 loss at the University of New England. Olivia Dwyer gave the hosts an early lead, but Lily Conway quickly responded off an assist from Catie McNulty. A second-half penalty stroke goal by the Nor’Easters ultimately decided the match, though Colby outshot the hosts 14–11 and matched them on penalty corners, keeping the game competitive throughout.
Over the weekend, following a tough home loss to the seventh-ranked Tufts Jumbos on Saturday, the Mules bounced back the next day with a dominant 7–1 road victory at Husson. Bridget Everett scored the first two goals of the game with Lily Harrington adding two more. Maddie Campbell, Jenna London, and Christina Sweeney also found the back of the net to put the game out of reach. The Mules controlled the match with 22 shots and a 10-8 advantage on penalty corners.
Colby will face off against Conn. College and Western New England University on the road this weekend.
