Ag in the Classroom at Otselic Valley

January/February 2026

Students explore agriculture through hands-on lessons with Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Students at Otselic Valley have been learning about agriculture in engaging, hands-on ways through Ag in the Classroom, a program offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County. In January, students explored the world of goats and other ruminants. They learned about the unique digestive systems of ruminant animals, basic goat anatomy, and the role these animals play in agriculture. Students even had the opportunity to meet a baby goat named Hannah, bringing the lesson to life. In February, the focus shifted to corn and popcorn. Students learned about corn’s importance in New York and across the country, explored corn kernel anatomy, and discovered what makes popcorn pop. The lesson also included a fun “Human Popcorn Machine” activity and a popcorn treat to wrap up the day. These interactive lessons help students better understand the important role agriculture plays in everyday life while connecting classroom learning to the world around them.
