Prep School Newsletter Friday 28 March 2025

It’s been a fantastic week! Mr Mossman regaled us with more of his fascinating Greek myths in assembly on Wednesday and our Privilege Lunch guests demonstrated why they had earned a special treat - what excellent manners they had. One more week to go and we hope to see a fluffy visitor "hopping" to the Prep School!

Assemblies with Mr Mossman!

On Wednesday, we were excited to welcome Mr. Mossman for another of his amazing assemblies, where he shared more fascinating Greek myths. So far, we’ve learned about Odysseus, Aphrodite, Zeus, and Achilles. We can't wait for the next installment after the Easter holidays!

What happened in School this week?

Music Tour to Normandy

On Wednesday, Sophia shared with us a fantastic PowerPoint about her Music Tour to Normandy with the Senior School. She clearly had an amazing time, and we so enjoyed hearing about her adventures.

Privilege Lunch Spring 2025

The Spring Term Privilege Lunch was, once again, a gastronomic delight! Mr Hall and his team prepared a delicious meal of burger, chips, salad and baked beans, followed by an ice cream for pudding. The children were so delightful, and Mrs Hall and Mrs Crotty had a most enjoyable time celebrating with them.

Forest Explorers

Nursery have had a lovely week enjoying the Spring sunshine. We learnt how to do tree bark rubbings using charcoal and paper. We also made some bark necklaces and decorated them using the charcoal.

Reception

The children in Reception have been learning about 3D shapes this week. They discovered that 3D shapes are solid and not flat! To help remember the names of each of the shapes, the children have been playing guessing games and they have enjoyed giving clues about a shape for the class to guess. The children have been exploring how many faces each shape has. As well as hunting for the shapes in the classroom and around the school, they had a castle building competition, using as many 3D shapes as they could in their creations.

Year 1 and 2 visit to Riverhill Himalayan Gardens

Spring was in full swing as Year 1 and 2 set off to the Riverhill Himalayan Gardens. Our guide, Kate, sparked our imaginations with tales of fairies and led us on a scavenger hunt to find magical items hidden around the gardens. Kate shared fascinating facts about the unique plants and trees, including rhododendrons brought back from the Himalayas by explorers who braved storms, shipwrecks, and even pirate attacks! We learned that bamboo rarely flowers, but when it does, every bamboo plant worldwide blooms at the same time — incredible!

We also saw majestic redwood trees with spongy, fire-retardant bark and visited the Turkey Oak Tree, grown from an acorn brought back from a war in Turkey. The gardens were full of life with frogspawn in the pond, bright marsh marigolds, and the first signs of wildflowers, roses and bluebells. The afternoon was packed with yeti hunting, den building, and fun in the playground. Each child has been gifted a return visit for them and an adult — perfect for a spring day out over Easter or beyond!

Year 3 and 4

In Forest School, Years 3 and 4 joined together to take a walk in the spring sunshine. In small groups they were tasked with finding the first signs of spring and to then document their findings on iPads. They all learned how to crop the photos, and then use the editing tools to adjust colour and brightness and to experiment with a variety of filters.

Year 5

As a final exploration of area and perimeter, Year Five had fun investigating a square metre. It was easy to fit the pupils from each house inside the square but do you think the whole class could fit in? Not quite and with everyone perched inside it was a squash! Art this week was full of the promise of spring as plum blossom was carefully created using precise brush strokes and mixed colours. The children experimented with a number of ways to paint the petals and stamen.

Year 6

Year 6 have had a fantastic week filled with achievement and exciting activities! They celebrated their victory in the Junior Enterprise competition by presenting their projects in assembly. In science, they enjoyed exploring the effects of multiple cells on bulb brightness in circuits. The pupils worked hard on their CPI assessments, achieving some excellent results. At the Mother's Day fair, they had fun spending their money on thoughtful gifts for their mothers. In English, they were captivated by the eerie new book "Clockwork" by Philip Pullman. To finish off the week, they participated in a photography competition with the theme of Spring, showcasing their creativity and capturing the beauty of the season.
