I am overwhelmed by the support of our community as I reflect on the previous year. The generosity of our loyal parents, grandparents, alums, and alum families made last year’s growth possible and speaks to the love and commitment of the Fayerweather community. We are proud to present the FY22 Impact Report to you.
Thanks to your support, we can continue to support our staff, and evolve and improve our academic program, which prepares our students to be responsive to the challenges of an ever-increasing complex world. Contributions to the Solid & Strong CommUNITY Fund and special designated gifts directly support our school operations, programming, library, and professional development and provide essential tuition assistance that makes our school accessible and equitable to a diverse range of families.

Welcome Zoan Stokes, Our New Librarian!
This year, we were delighted to introduce Zoan Stokes, who joined us as the vibrant and passionate school librarian. Zoan brought with her a wealth of experience and a genuine love for fostering a lifelong love of learning. We sat down with Zoan to learn more about her journey and her interests:
What inspired you to work in schools?
I knew early on in my life that I loved helping others learn. As a student, who had a difficult time learning how to read, the joy I felt once I overcame the task was immeasurable, and I wanted to pass that feeling on to anyone who would let me.
What is your favorite book and why?
Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel is my favorite book because it was the first book I learned how to read on my own as a struggling reader. I believe it helps build my understanding of friendships and love of amphibians and reptiles.
What is your favorite thing or hobby outside of school?
My happy place is in the kitchen. I LOVE to bake. I learned from my Granny Rosie (who raised me). She always put ALL her love into baking, so it was also how I learned how to show my love.
Do you have a favorite grade level or age to teach?
My favorite grade to teach second grade (I taught 2nd grade for over 10 years). In second-grade, students' personalities really start to shine through. They are not only learning to read but reading to learn, and figuring out what interests them through reading and books amazes me!
What are you reading right now?
I am a bookaholic, so I am reading several books right now: The Tapping Solution to Creating Lasting Change by Jessica Ortner, Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown, The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, book 3) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson.
Championing Inclusivity: Fayerweather's Journey in LGBTQ+ Rights and Advocacy
Fayerweather has long been a school dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights and advocacy, honoring, valuing, and affirming students and the many aspects of their identities. As we head into another year together, we are both excited and encouraged about our work. We are very aware of and concerned about the current climate our LGBTQ+ community is facing. FSS remains committed to supporting, affirming, and holding our transgender, genderqueer, gender non-binary, and all LGBTQ+ students, staff, and families. It is part of our school’s mission to welcome everyone and accept them for who they are and where they are in their journey.
This commitment to supporting students’ identities is aligned with our school mission, and one of the ways we are living this is through creating our Gender Support Team. This team’s purpose is to help create and maintain policies and procedures around supporting youth and their gender identities by providing assistance and guidance when questions, concerns, or specific incidents arise. The team is also working on an overall gender vision statement that will be shared with the community this year and will become part of the parent and student handbooks.
So far, the Gender Support Committee has helped produce an inclusive bathroom policy and pronoun/name guidelines. The Gender Support plan and name/pronoun change form are internal documents that help teachers/staff get on the same page when a student needs additional support. They are ways we create a shared understanding and a way forward in our support of individual students.
We want the school to be a place where all people feel welcomed, seen for who they truly are, and given the resources, they need to be their full selves. We encourage families to reach out to us at gender-support-team@group.fayerweather.org if they have questions or are looking for additional support. We are stronger together as a community, and we will work to hold each other and keep our community as a loving and welcoming place.

"My favorite thing about Fayerweather is the incredible sense of community we have in everything we do, from Fun Fest to All School Meetings, to learning in the classroom. That sense of community is everywhere.

Anya – 7 years at FSS
"My favorite part of FSS is the wonderful energy they have in all of the classrooms. The teachers are there, ready to support you and help fit your learning needs, which drew me to Fayerweather in the first place. By joining the board, I hope to give insight into what it is like to be a unit student at FSS and advocate for my peers and other grades. I hope I can accomplish my goals, and I'm so excited to take advantage of this great opportunity!"
Kavita – 6 years at FSS
"One of my very favorite things about my time at FSS is partaking in the Unit Play. It taught me how to work better in large groups and how to take more risks. Since it's my last year at Fayerweather, I hope to leave it in the best state possible and provide new ideas to help better improve the school."
