Congratulations! You are moving on to AP Art where, with hardwork and a sense of curiosity, you will create an amazing portfolio of work! Your summer assignment is to focus on Developing Your Craft! Choose the assignment with the pathway that aligns with your most recent Intermediate Arts class (Intermediate Drawing and Painting, Photography 1&2, Design in Clay 1&2).
Complete your planning, research and practice in the zine provided at the end of the school year. Missing your zine? Make another with 18x24 paper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMdus-lNqFg
You will submit your zine sketchbook and artwork the first week of school for critique and first exhibition!
Intermediate Drawing and Painting-Observational Art
Create a series of 3 artworks outside of your sketchbook that demonstrate careful observation. You can choose the material and size but your work must demonstrate an understanding of composition, depth and mastery of material. Try not to draw from reference photos only. You can use them as a support but make sure you are looking at the subject you are drawing!
Subject Suggestions:
- still life set up
- plein air- go outside and paint/draw your environment
- draw corners of your room or of a building
- figures in a space
- self-portraiture

Design in Clay 1&2 - Construction
Create a 3D cardboard sculpture of an everyday object. You have 2 options for your cardboard creation- Option 1: Replica, Option 2: Larger Than Life
Create everything using recycled/found cardboard. Replicate textures and forms to make the cardboard object as realistic as possible. Bonus if you can make it move!
Successful sculptures could be selected for the Maryland Department of the Environment Recycled Art Competition in the fall!
Sculpture Option 1: Replica
Sculpture Option 2: Larger Than Life
