Steele Hill A.M.E. Zion Church

Rev. Dr. Jerret C. Fite

Pastor

A Pastor With A Smile!

There is a pastor,

Who loves to tell jokes all the time,

In his sermons he makes us laugh,

And forget all our troubles,

He’ll begin with a story so funny,

And we’ll all grin, even the grumpy,

He'll weave it in with a scripture,

And we’ll learn, while feeling richer.

His humor is always on point,

And we’ll listen, without a disappoint,

His sermons are never a bore,

We’ll leave church, feeling good, for sure.

Here’s to our Pastor, so kind,

Who spreads joy like flowers entwined,

We thank you for each joyful mile,

And for filling every aisle with a smile.

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” – Psalm 126:3
Our Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jerret C. Fite

In The community

In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.

But early detection for all is only possible through action. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is dedicated to Helping Women Now®. The earlier we act, the bigger our impact — and we need your help. (National Breast Cancer Foundation)

This is a Facebook post from our neightbors to the south, Hall Family Farms. For decades, the Hall Family Farm was located in Ballantyne at the corner of Providene Road West and Johnston Road, across from Big Pineville A.M.E. Zion Church. A few years ago, they sold their 11-acres to Novant Health. Following the sale, the Hall Family Farm relocated to Highway 75, just south of Steele Hill, on the way to Van Wyck. They have expanded their agribusiness operations. Now, you may be wondering why I am including this in the e-news and what does this have to dow with thinking outside of the box.

In bigger news, this Saturday we will host a great business on our farm, Stepp's Hillcrest Orchard. We have been going to the Hendersonville, NC area to pick apples at Stepp's for over 40 years, across four generations. They are a family-owned orchard that employs dozens of friends and family, just like us. This year, after growing the first great crop they've had in three years, Hurricane Helene shut down their doors ahead of one of their prime weekends. Though their farm sustained minimal damage, the roads leading to the orchard are severely damaged and customers are unable to get to their property. With an abundance of apples to sell and nowhere to sell them, they reached out asking if they could sell some of their crop at our farm--we said yes! This is how it will go: They will bring large bins of apples that they will bag into half-peck bags (around 5lbs) that they will sell for around $20 (the specific price will be in tomorrow's post). These will be sold under a tent next to the Coffee Cottage.

In summary, tomorrow, you can support a family-owned business who was impacted by Helene. You will get some delicious NC Mountain apples. If a half-peck is too much for you, share with family and friends or split the costs and apples with someone. Follow the Halls Family Farm Facebook page for more information.

I just heard today that, due to the hurricane, Lancaster County has extended voter registration until October 14. This pertains to in-person registration. If you plan to register in -person, I suggest you call the Lancaster County Voter Registration office, 803.285.2969.

Lancaster County School Bond Referendum

On The November ballot is a school bond referendum that if passed, will fund several school projects across the County. In our area, a new high school, about the same size as Indian Land High, will be built near the NC/SC State line off of Harrisburg Rd,, near Indian Hill A.M.E. Zion Church. Also, a new Elementary School will be in that same area.

Three months after his trade from the Atlanta Hawks to the Houston Rockets, young forward AJ Griffin retired from the NBA to focus on a career in ministry, he announced Sunday.

“I gave up basketball to follow Jesus,” Griffin, now 21 years old, said in a video posted to YouTube. “I feel like letting go of basketball is allowing me to go into full-time ministry and truly serving the Lord with all my heart. With all my time, too. ... I could feel like the Lord was calling me to let go of basketball and serve him more.”

For Griffin, a Duke product who was drafted at No. 16 overall in the 2022 first round, the announcement marks the conclusion (at least for now) of an unusual two-plus years in professional basketball.
