Modeshift STARS A national Award for School Travel Plans

What is Modeshift STARS?

Modeshift STARS is a National Award for School Travel Plans, established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.

The aims of Modeshift STARS:

  • Promoting healthier lifestyles – by encouraging people to get active through more walking and cycling, thereby creating healthier and more productive communities.
  • Creating safer environments – by helping organisations to identify and address travel and transport issues to enable safer journeys for all.
  • Promoting urban and rural regeneration – by ensuring that places are well connected, and that people are well informed of the travel options that are available to them.
  • Improving Air Quality – by reducing the number of vehicles and congestion around sites to improve the quality of air locally.
We are working with Kirklees council on this project, 20% of schools across Kirklees are Modeshift schools."

A constant cycle of:

  • Assess the issues
  • Develop a plan to tackle them
  • Review impact/ progress

How much progress have we made?

  • We signed up in March 2024

A ‘Good’ level of accreditation was achieved in Spring/Summer 2024

By Winter 2024, we hope to achieve ‘Very Good’ level.

The next levels would be ‘Excellent’, followed by ‘Outstanding’

To achieve the higher levels of accreditation we need:

  • consistent effort
  • engagement in Safe
  • active
  • environmentally Friendly Travel over a longer period of time.

What’s in the pipeline?

  • Discussions at School council meetings
  • Road Safety story time for our Reception pupils in October
  • Year 4 and Year 5 will be speed watching in October
  • In support of anti-idling, our School Council will take part in a balloon release demonstration tihs October
  • First Aid skills will be developed for our Year 6 children throughout October, November and December
