Our Learning nURSERY, TERM 2A, WEEK 3

Firstly, an egg update. On Monday a few small cracks appeared on the egg. This was both worrying and exciting. After a debate followed by a vote, we decided not to smash the egg open but to take a 'wait and see' approach.

We observed and documented the changes in the egg.

On Wednesday, a small furry creature cautiously emerged from the egg. The children have been so caring towards the creature even though we know nothing about where it has come from or what kind of creature it is. For now we are looking after it in the classroom.

The egg and the creature have inspired some artwork in our creative zone...

A beautifully decorated egg.
Using modelling clay to make creatures.
An example of our artwork.

In other news this week, our maths work has been about patterns.

Exploring linear abab patterns and making patterns on a ten frame.

I love how proud the children are that they can recognise their names and are beginning to form their special letters. This has been a popular activity choice this week.

Super name writing.
Having a go at the first letter of our names.
A drawing challenge to develop pen control.
Focusing on keeping symbols a consistent size and shape. All important pre-writing work.
Building our strength and fluidity ready for writing.

I could show you a hundred moments each day where the children are learning new skills through play but for now, I'd like to through a spotlight on playing with construction toys.

Fun with construction.

Building small worlds is great for growing imagination and developing communication and language with others. The smaller muscles in the children's hands are exercised when positioning blocks or cutting up boxes. Scientific theories can be tested (what will happen if i...?) and mathematical concepts explored (how tall is this tower?). So if you have any construction toys at home, get them out and play with your child, it's good for their learning!
