Reading Girls' School newsletter - 17 may 2024

Principal's message:

At RGS we work hard to provide a number of opportunities for the students to engage with businesses and universities. This is aimed at raising aspirations and showing our students what they are able to achieve. Below is one of these experiences.

As part of their volunteering week, PWC visited a Year 10 PSHE class for a Financial Literacy workshop. PWC are an accounting and business management consultancy firm. They showed us what payslips look like and worked with students to help them understand the different deductions and what they are used for. Students also considered student loans and budgeting for holidays. PWC were impressed by the level of knowledge some of our Year 10s already had about tax and pensions. The students also enjoyed hearing about their career journeys and found out about life at PWC.

Uniform update: For your information, our school uniform can be purchased from Stevensons new shop in Reading. They have relocated to a new store at 4 Chatham Place, Reading RG1 7AR. Their opening times can be found on their website www.stevensons.co.uk, along with all their latest information.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

ARCH Talk: Explosives! Past, Present and Future - Wednesday 22 May, 18.00, The Abbey School

We are delighted to be hosting Professor Jackie Akhavan, a leader in the field of explosives research in the UK. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the Institute of Explosives Engineers, in 2016 Professor Akhavan established the Abel Building, a new state-of-the-art chemistry facility and centre of excellence for research and development in energetic materials. She has also been the inspiration behind the Centre of Excellence in Energetic Materials, working with the MoD and other agencies to deliver this new UK national capability.

The talk will take place at 18.00 in the school's Lecture Theatre. Light refreshments will be served outside the Lecture Theatre from 17.30 and we expect the talk to finish no later than 19.00. Please note that parking onsite will be limited; parking on the roads around the school is free after 17.30. This event is open to students aged 11 and above; students in years 7 to 9 should be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be reserved through The Abbey's Eventbrite page, using the following link:

This promises to be a fascinating evening exploring the (often unexpected!) importance of explosives in our lives and the ways in which they will affect the future. We look forward to seeing you there.

Personal Development Days

Knife Crime Awareness

Thames Valley Police have been running workshops with the Year 7 students to warn them of the dangers of knife crime and discuss strategies to keep themselves safe. It is superb to have these sessions for our students and we are very grateful to them for them for their support.

  • "I learned that knives ruins lives and self defence does not mean I have to carry a knife"
  • "I enjoyed the experience - I love how I now have met a real police officer"

Year 10 Rounders

A huge congratulations to our Year 10 Rounders team for winning the Reading Schools’ Rounders Tournament. They scored some excellent half and full rounders but were particularly slick with their fielding, efficiently stopping the other teams from scoring or getting them out with some fantastic catches and quick throws to bases to be stumped out. They fielded so well in their final game against Highdown School that they got all of them out before they were able to take their allocated 18 bowls. Well done!

The Year 9 tournament takes place on Wednesday next week. The PE Dept will make final team selections on Monday at Rounders Club.

The Year 8 tournament will be the first week back after half term. Year 7 tournament will be the second week back after half term.
