Kenai Photo Workshop

Trip Report for Tom Bol Photo Workshops

kenai Fjords National Park

Our Kenai Workshop featured five days of exploring the coastal rainforest in Seward and Homer, Alaska. Our boat rides in Kenai Fjords National park were the highlight of the trip. We photographed a huge amount of calving ice in Northwestern Fjord from the deck of our boat. Everywhere we traveled the landscapes and wildlife were equally spectacular.

Whales

We had a very lucky trip for whales with both Orca and Humpbacks sightings on several days of the workshop. One of the Humpback Whales breached twelve times right in front of our group in Northwestern Fjord. We found pods of Orca in both Kenai Fjords NP and on the way to Seldovia in Kachemak Bay.

Sea Otters

The Otter Photography was another highlight of the workshop. We were able to get very close to a pair of female otters in the boat harbor in Homer. We went back three times to capture the different expressions as they groomed and rolled around in the water in front of us.

Culture

The Kenai Peninsula has an interesting history of Russian exploration and American gold prospectors. We visited a Russian Orthodox church in Ninilchik and the historic town of Seldovia to photograph historic sites. The graveyard at Ninilchik was filled with wildflowers and charm.

Bald Eagles

Bald Eagles flock to the beaches on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula to welcome back the daily fishing charters. It was easy to get quite close to the birds as they waited for more fish to arrive on the beach. Lenses in the 100-500 mm range were enough to get full frame eagle photos.

Plants & Wildflowers

The coastal rainforest has an incredible diversity of plants and wildflowers. We used wide angle lenses to photograph sun streaming through Devil's Club leaves near Seward. We switched to longer lenses to reach the waterlilies near Moose Pass. While we were there we watched a Bald Eagle stalk baby ducklings in the pond. And finally, no trip to the Kenai Penninsula is complete without a stop to photograph lupine near Homer.
