Mondesi is jailed for 6 years and 9 months for corruption when he was mayor

Outfielder Raul Mondesi (53), who played with Park Chan-ho for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the U.S. Major League Baseball, has been sentenced to prison for corruption in his country.

The Associated Press said Mondesi, accused of corruption, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison and fined $507,000 in a Dominican Republic court.

Mondesi, who debuted with the Dodgers in 1993, a year before Park Chan-ho, won the Rookie of the Year award in 1994 and was a slugger, winning an All-Star once and a Gold Glove twice.

Since 2000, he has been wandering the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Anaheim Angels, and the Atlanta Braves, before retiring at the end of the 2005 season.

He hit .273 with 271 home runs and 860 RBIs in his 13-year MLB career.

Mondesi, who returned to his country after retirement and turned politician, served as a lawmaker and mayor.

However, he was charged with various corruption charges, including embezzling $5 million during his time as mayor of San Cristobal from 2010 to 2016, and was eventually sentenced to prison.
