Principally Speaking
What a great week! 🥳We celebrated this year’s Honorary Lifetime PTA Members, outstanding volunteers Jennifer Gibson and Tamara Pounds, along with our Teacher of the Year, Roanda Velazquez! Our school namesake, Jimmy Jones, visited 3rd grade and gifted each student a dictionary. Arlington Fire Department visited with 1st grade to discuss fire safety. Our artists are shining at the Youth Art Show at the Arlington Expo Center and some 4th graders proudly represented us at the State of the District to show how our music program uses the Orff approach- where students learn by doing, using movement, instruments, and creativity to make learning and music come alive. So proud of our All-Stars! And tomorrow we have many students participating in the UIL A+ competition in various areas such as music memory, chess puzzles, storytelling and more! Good luck! ✨ ¡Qué semana tan fantástica! 🥳 Celebramos a los Miembros Honorarios de la PTA de este año —las dedicadas voluntarias Jennifer Gibson y Tamara Pounds—, ¡asà como a nuestra Maestra del Año, Roanda Velázquez! La persona que da nombre a nuestra escuela, Jimmy Jones, visitó a los alumnos de tercer grado y regaló un diccionario a cada estudiante. El Departamento de Bomberos de Arlington visitó a primer grado para hablar sobre seguridad contra incendios. ¡Nuestros artistas están brillando en la Exposición de Arte Juvenil (Youth Art Show) en el Arlington Expo Center! Además, algunos alumnos de cuarto grado nos representaron con orgullo en el evento State of the District para mostrar cómo nuestro programa de música utiliza el método Orff, en el que los estudiantes aprenden haciendo, empleando el movimiento, los instrumentos y la creatividad para dar vida al aprendizaje y a la música. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestras All-Stars! Y mañana, ¡tendremos a muchos estudiantes participando en la competencia UIL A+ en diversas áreas, tales como memoria musical, acertijos de ajedrez, narración de cuentos y más! ¡Buena suerte! ✨

Next week brings two exciting events: The Addams Family musical and Bingo Night! Our annual musical is something we look forward to all year, and we are so proud of the hard work and talent of everyone involved in making it a fantastic production. Bingo Night & Silent Auction is one of our premier events, filled with fun, games, and great prizes, all while raising funds that directly benefit our students and staff. These events are truly special for our community. We hope to see you there! La prĂłxima semana nos trae dos eventos emocionantes: ¡el musical La familia Addams y la Noche de Bingo! Nuestro musical anual es un acontecimiento que esperamos con emociĂłn durante todo el año, y nos sentimos sumamente orgullosos del arduo trabajo y del talento de todos los que han participado para hacer de esta una producciĂłn fantástica. La Noche de Bingo y Subasta Silenciosa es uno de nuestros eventos más destacados, lleno de diversiĂłn, juegos y premios, todo mientras recaudamos fondos que benefician directamente a nuestros estudiantes y al personal. Overcoming End-of-Year Academic Burnout
This is the time of year where students start to get spring fever. As the weather starts to warm up and Springtime offers a world of new possibilities, students start to shut down. It is simply the cyclic nature of the learning process and a consequence of the school calendar, but although their minds are wandering elsewhere, there is still much work to be done at school. Springtime is when students should begin buckling own to prepare for final exams, and yet their ability to concentrate is at its lowest. Motivation dwindles and students can’t seem to see the end of the tunnel. As a parent, it can be extremely disheartening to watch your child struggle with a lack of motivation or even wrestle with the anxiety that goes hand in hand with the end of the school year. Academic burnout can cause students to feel a lack of motivation, inability to focus, an apparent lack of concern, and mental exhaustion. The end-of-year academic demands can stress out even the most promising students. As your student approaches the end of the school year, what can you do to help them finish strong and overcome the potential for academic burnout? What things can you do to best support your child at home?
Stick to Your Routine
When you’re this close to the end of the school year, there’s no reason to make big changes. As the year wears on and fatigue sets in, you’re more prone to forgetfulness. Rather than derailing your morning routine because you thought you’d try a new route to school only to hit unexpected traffic, stick with what works. The end of school can be stressful enough. Don’t add self-inflicted hurdles.
Give Your Child Another Reason to Smile
The school years feels even longer to a child than an adult. Kids get up early, manage homework and school projects and maybe after school activities, too. As they happily check off the final days of the school year, offer encouragement. Include an encouraging note or an extra treat in their lunch. Or, as schools often have shorter days near the end of the year, plan a fun activity for after school either as a surprise or as something for them to look forward to.
Conclusion
End-of-the-school-year burnout is common but can be managed. It’s simply a matter of preparing for it. Parents, be there for your children the best you can, whether it’s helping them get through their final assignments or keeping them focused running that final stretch.
STAAR Exams
The following is the schedule for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Test on these days. The cafeteria and school will be closed to visitors/parents on testing days. El siguiente es el horario de las prĂłximas evaluaciones estatales llamadas STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). - Thursday, April 9- 3rd, 4th & 5th Reading Language Arts/Lectura
- Tuesday, April 14- 5th Science/Ciencias

- Please try to avoid any early dismissals for personal reasons. Por favor evite recoger a su estudiante temprano por razones personales.

- As always, we will have a scheduled lunch break during testing days. The cafeteria will provide lunch for students or students may bring their lunch from home. Summer Programming w/ Boys & Girls Club
Are you looking for a safe, structured, affordable, and engaging summer program for your child? The Boys & Girls Club will offer a Summer Program at Miller Elementary from June 1–30. While the program will take place at Miller (not Jones), it provides students with a supportive environment that includes academic enrichment, social development, recreational activities, and healthy lifestyle programs. Volunteer Sign Up
Many hands make light work and we love our volunteers. We depend on our parents and volunteers to help make the best learning environment that we can for our kids. We encourage you to be an approved volunteer to help make a difference at school, sponsor fine arts events, chaperone field trips and work with students. All volunteers must submit an online application (every year) and upload a copy of your unexpired government-issued photo ID to the volunteer application.
Muchas manos facilitan el trabajo y amamos a nuestros voluntarios. Dependemos de nuestros padres y voluntarios para ayudar a crear el mejor ambiente de aprendizaje posible para nuestros hijos. Crayon Initiative March 23- April 24
We are going to take the next several weeks to focus on some sustainable and recyclable projects for the school. The first one will be The Crayon Initiative. While you are at home for Spring Break, gather up all those broken, discarded, unloved crayons and bag them up. We will get them sorted and send them off to a company that will melt them into new crayons to donate to Children's Hospitals all over the US. Help us get rid of waste and learn to help others as well. The attached flyer tells more. Be watching for a sign up for ways to help.
