Rothenburg, Germany Postcard

This is a postcard of one of my favorite places that I’ve ever visited, the picturesque little town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. In each letter of “Rothenburg” is a photograph (most of which I took myself) of particularly memorable or aesthetic places and things in the town. This project taught me all about using layers and embedding images into text, as well as readability and color scheme skills. I’m pleased with the result, especially its overall cohesion. I hope that the postcard conveys to viewers a concept of the beauty and serenity of Rothenburg.

Beauty Standard Factory

I’ve created a photo collage which depicts simplistic, conceptual factory with a line of identical, “perfect” female heads and a line of the identical molds which they’re all made from. In the background there are posters depicting the stringent standard which each head is required to fit. I learned how to work with drop shadows, resizing, color adjustments, and blur, which all contribute to the illusion of depth. My goal was to portray the [dangers] of adhering to ever-growing beauty standards and trends. I see room for improvement in it, but I’m proud of it for the level of experience I had at the time.

The Final Petal

I’ve made a movie poster for a fictitious movie, The Final Petal. This project helped me learn how to create my own seamless pattern (the rose print behind the hooded figure), and how to selectively adjust colors to simplify designs into a limited color palette. My goal was to make something that could actually be printed into a legitimate movie poster with the screen-printing method. This is one of my proudest works, and I’m very happy with how the layers of the foreground, midground, and background come together cohesively, and how the composition is visually pleasing. I hope viewers contrive a sense of wonder, and can each use their imaginations to come up with what this movie could be about to them.

The Phantom Tollburlap

The Phantom Tollbooth was one of my favorite books growing up, and I still love it just as much today, as it’s the sort of book that grows with you and can mean different things at each different stage of life. Here I’ve reimagined the book cover, completely in burlap and sackcloth. I learned how to “cut” images out of materials and compose them to look coherent. My goals were to create as much depth as possible by layering over and over again and to make a pleasing color scheme. I hope my book cover is similar enough to the original for my audience to recognize it, but different enough to feel fresh and original.
