The Center for Student Success enables students to develop the skills and strategies needed to prosper academically, socially and professionally while at Carolina and after graduation. Every student — regardless of academic level — benefits from the resources available through the Center for Student Success, including Honors Carolina students, merit scholarship recipients, first-generation college students and Carolina Covenant Scholars.
Through integrated and comprehensive approaches, the Center fosters equal access to success across student populations through several programs:
The Learning Center offers academic coaching, peer tutoring, ADHD/LD support, STEM support and more through face-to-face and online coaching as well as a collection of online resources, study groups and workshops for students and educators.
The Writing Center offers writing assistance on any project at any point in the writing process as well as popular tips and tools on its website. One-on-one appointments and group workshops are available.
The Carolina Firsts Program helps first-generation college students — who represent 20% of all undergraduate students — navigate the college experience, celebrate successes and make meaningful connections along the way.
Summer Bridge offers incoming students, many from small or rural high schools, a six-week residential academic program. Summer Bridge enables students to begin their first semester with college credit and a sense of the cultural, professional and recreational activities at Carolina.
Peer Mentoring assists in the academic, social and personal development of students, fostering holistic student growth and achievement.
Transfer Student Services support our transfer student population through academic coaching and peer support programs tailored to the transfer student experience.
Growing student demand for Center for Student Success programs necessitates more space. With the advent of the new curriculum, student traffic in the Center has significantly increased. All students now learn about our services in a required first-year course.
“Successful students need the best programs and services to support them while on campus. By moving the Center for Student Success to the heart of campus, more students will be served and in a space that meets the evolving needs of a modern student body — while strengthening Carolina’s role as one of the top public universities in the country.”
- James W.C. White, Craver Family Dean, UNC College of Arts and Sciences
The project is underway to move the Center for Student Success from South Campus to the heart of campus, the Robert B. House Undergraduate Library — a central, consolidated location near dining facilities, classrooms and student gathering places that will more than double the physical presence of the Center from 6,000 to 16,000 square feet.
This move will be made possible by generous philanthropic support from alumni, parents and friends who want to ensure ALL Carolina students have the resources they need to thrive at Carolina and beyond. To complete this $7.5 million project, an ambitious fundraising effort is underway.
The University is pleased to recognize donors for their partnership and support through various naming and recognition opportunities.
Naming Opportunities: Spaces
The newly renovated Center for Student Success in the Robert B. House Undergraduate Library includes the following naming opportunities:
Entire Upper Level - $3,000,000
This will be the new home of the Center for Student Success and its constituent programs. Centrally located on the upper level of the House Undergraduate Library, the Center will occupy 16,000 square feet of the 26,000-square-foot upper level. It will be a short walk away from student gathering spots and dining options in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, Student Stores and Lenoir Dining Hall. Each week, hundreds of students will be greeted by signage naming the upper level, a welcoming space dedicated to maximizing their academic success at Carolina.
North Reading Room - $1,000,000
The North Reading Room will occupy 7,573 square feet and will include the Center’s reception desk, offices, sensory-sensitive rooms and a small conference room. This space is adjacent to the epicenter of student life, The Pit, as it is affectionately known.
South Reading Room - $1,000,000
Overlooking the iconic Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, the South Reading Room will span 7,522 square feet and include offices, a large instructional space, and a flexible workshop and event space.
Instructional Space - $500,000
The instructional space will provide 1,550 square feet of discrete space for programs. Students will be welcomed into an inviting space abuzz with academic coaching, peer tutoring, discipline-specific small group meetings and other learning activities.
Flexible Workshop and Event Space - $500,000
The 913-square-foot flex space will provide an adaptable area that can be configured day to day or hour to hour based on the Center’s and students’ needs — whether that is a smaller space for a group studying for an organic chemistry test, a larger space for peer mentoring activities and appointments, a presentation from Transfer Student Services or a cohort of Summer Bridge or Carolina Firsts students.
Offices - $100,000
The Center for Student Success’ full-time staff is quite large and includes various discipline specific specialists including writing coach specialists, STEM learning specialists, ADHD/LD specialists and more. The coaching and tutoring staff of the Writing and Learning Centers alone offer 550 appointments a week. Many of the offices will be multi-purpose. In addition to providing discrete space where students can speak freely about sensitive topics related to their learning and academics, offices will be provided for the associate dean of the Center for Student Success, the director of the Writing and Learning Centers, and program coordinators for Summer Bridge, Carolina Firsts, Peer Mentoring and Transfer Students. Number of offices available for naming: Approximately 20
