A Message from the Headteacher
This week's News

It appears that spring may have sprung. I hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather and of course some of the signs that spring brings. Naturally, I am going to state that this has again been a busy week at Birkwood.

Yesterday the celebrations for World book day were absolutely superb. Thank you so much for your support especially with the different outfits, costumes and pyjamas that the children wore. I think that they looked brilliant, and I hope you enjoyed some of the photos from the day. Thank you to Mrs Wilkie for leading our commemoration of what is becoming a special day in the school calendar.

I had the pleasure of hosting Captain’s Table this week. This gives us an opportunity to recognise individual children for their house point success! It links perfectly with the school values and highlights the children's efforts of which we are so proud.

All house points go towards our end of half-term results, and we hosted our treat – the House Winners Party. Fish & Chips never gets boring! The children had a great time and seemed delighted with the feast!

This morning our children who represent us via the School council embarked upon their trip to London and the Houses of Parliament. As seems to be the way with transport, a train cancellation meant a slightly different route. I am sure that they will have a fantastic day and build some memories that will last a long time. A Fantastic opportunity!

Thanks to our stunning fund-raising team, Disco tickets will be on sale from Monday next week. As ever, I am sure this event will be supported tremendously - the children always have a superb time.

I look forward to hearing about the safety sessions which we have scheduled in for Year 5 and 6 next week. We have an official from Barnsley Council coming in to deliver work around the prevent duty. Keeping the children safe is always our number one priority and I'm sure they will learn some valuable lessons

I have worked with Mrs. Cocking & the Barnsley Council Health & Safety Department to look at our Emergency procedures. This will involve practising evacuating school (similar to a fire drill) and bringing all the children into school. I will write to you and also send the PowerPoint I shall use in Assembly. This has been on our Health & Safety Plan and I am committed to doing everything I can to keep everyone safe wherever possible.

Barnsley's Care4Us council are appealing for Easter eggs, chocolate and sweets. This council is made up of young people aged 8 to 25 who are either looked after or have left the care system but are still part of the leaving care system. Please see the below leaflet.

We seem to have enjoyed an upturn weather wise – I have even cut my club's cricket field! So please enjoy the sunshine and plan in some special family time – outdoors may be a great shout!
