Italy's Atalanta swept Germany's Leverkusen, which had been unbeaten this season, to win the Europa League championship.

Atalanta, who reached the Europa League final for the first time since its inception, was expected to struggle with Leverkusen, who won the German Bundesliga unbeaten this season, but the results were completely different.

The hero who led Atalanta to the championship was Nigerian striker Lukman.

Lukman scored the first goal with a sensational left-footed shot from Chapacosta's cross in the 12th minute of the first half, and 14 minutes later, he beat a Leverkusen defender and shook the net with a right-footed mid-range shot.

Then, in the counterattack chance in the 30th minute of the second half, he even hit a wedge shot that determines his victory.

Atalanta were honoured by Hackman's hat-trick performance to complete a 3-0 win and lift the European championship trophy for the first time since the team was founded.

It is the first time in 61 years that Atalanta has won a major tournament since it topped the second division in 1963.

Leverkusen, who was beaten by Atalanta, stopped its unbeaten streak in 51 games this season, and its goal of winning three gold medals this season by winning the Bundesliga, the Europa League and the Pokal Cup was also thwarted.
