Important Milestones: Your Child By One Year
As your baby’s first teacher, you can improve your child’s learning and brain development. The CDC has information for parents and caregivers to understand childhood development and to track if your child is reaching those developmental milestones.
Track your child’s milestones from age 2 months to 5 years with CDC’s easy-to-use illustrated checklists, get tips from CDC for encouraging your child’s development, and find out what to do if you are ever concerned about how your child is developing. Download CDC’s free Milestone Tracker app to complete a milestone checklist for your child.
Try these simple tips and activities when they are alert and ready to play. Teach your baby “wanted behaviors.” Show her what to do and use positive words or give her hugs and kisses when she does it. For example, if she pulls your pet’s tail, teach her how to pet gently and give her a hug when she does it.
- Talk or sing to your baby about what you’re doing. For example, “Mommy is washing your hands” or sing, “This is the way we wash our hands.”
- Build on what your baby tries to say. If he says “ta,” say “Yes, a truck,” or if he says “truck,” say “Yes, that’s a big, blue truck.”
- Visit CDC's article on milestones to learn more.
Visit the CDC website and talk with your baby’s doctor if you have questions or for more ideas on how to help your baby’s development.
The Arizona Early Intervention Program is here to help infants and toddlers with development delays. There is no out of pocket cost for AzEIP services and no doctor’s referral is needed.
