NPPS Newsletter End of term 2 2024

Principal's Message

As we enter the holiday break, I am proud to reflect on a term that has provided focused teaching and vibrant learning experiences for our students. I would like to acknowledge our staff, whose daily enthusiasm and commitment consistently impacts on our students' success. As we start the holidays, I want to emphasise the importance of taking this time to rest and recharge. It’s crucial for both students and staff to enjoy a well-deserved break, ready to return with renewed energy and focus.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to our P&C, with particular appreciation to our president, Nadia Tamigi, and our board chair, Daniel Smith. Your efforts and support have been invaluable to our school and community.

Please take a moment to review the Term Planner for a preview of the busy and exciting Term 3 ahead. We have many activities and events planned, and I look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for another productive term.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge two staff members who are leaving us at the end of this term. We wish our Year 5 teacher, Mrs. Aung, all the best as she is expecting her first child, and Miss Hayes (Education Assistant) as she moves to Melbourne to pursue other opportunities. Both staff members have been instrumental in their respective roles and will be missed.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable break.

NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week is held in the first week of July every year (Sunday to Sunday) to celebrate and recognise the cultures, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud

The 2024 NAIDOC Week theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’ invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The fire represents the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite the challenges faced. It is a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. ‘Blak, Loud and Proud’ encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to stand tall in their heritage and assert their place in the modern world. This theme calls for a reclamation of narratives, an amplification of voices, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality. It invites all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of Indigenous peoples are fully valued and respected.

Over recent weeks, students have participated in NAIDOC activities in their classrooms as well as in Visual Art and Music specialist classes. Their learning culminated in extraordinary presentations of artwork, music, poetry and storytelling at the final assembly for the term.

A huge thank you to our Music and Visual Arts Specialist Teachers, Mrs Haines and Mrs Hanlon for coordinating the students to share their knowledge and experiences with the school community.

Proposed Service Station

Thank you to those parents who completed our survey regarding the proposed service station at 41-43 Angove Street. We will reflect our community's position in our submission to the City of Vincent.

The survey received over 130 responses in just 3 days. The overwhelming majority (96.21%) are opposed to the development.

125th Art Project Update

Classes have been working hard and engaging with our Artist in Residence Jodie Davidson, to make our collaborative 125th Artwork. Our goal with this project has been to create a collaborative artwork that can be installed at the front of the school that will represent what 125 years of North Perth Primary School means to our current students.

Students’ ideas and drawings were gathered in the first sessions and then collated by Jodie to make our ‘vision’ for the piece. Students started by creating single line and blind contour drawings, which have then been their templates for the wire work. Students have been making birds, leaves and faces from wire. They are learning to use tools and to persevere when things are tricky.

The birds, leaves and faces will then become the surround for the wire drawing of our school, which will be mounted in the middle.

We plan for the work to be installed soon, so keep a look out for it!

Wellbeing Wagon

Starting next term, we will be trialling a Wellbeing Wagon that will run out of the library at Break 1 and the hall at Break 2. Each week we will have different activities that students can participate in to help build friendships and work on social skills. Activities will include drawing and paper craft, board games and building blocks/construction. The wagon will be run by our Education Assistants, School Wellbeing Officer Wini and our deputies. The aim will be to support students to develop positive interactions with their peers and help build better connections with each other.

Introducing our New Peer Mediators

Year 6 students recently embarked on an inspiring journey to become peer mediators, starting with crafting heartfelt letters explaining their desire to take on this important role. After careful selection, these students delved into an intensive day-long session dedicated to understanding the theory and practice of Peer Mediation.

Throughout the day, students enthusiastically engaged in collaborative activities, sharing ideas with their peers. They explored the qualities that define a successful Peer Mediator, contrasting these with traits that are less effective. A particular focus was placed on honing effective listening skills, crucial for resolving conflicts.

The session empowered students to identify common disputes they might encounter and equipped them with strategies for handling these situations constructively. Through role-playing exercises and script practice, they gained practical insights into conflict resolution, emphasising a solution-oriented approach and nurturing a growth mindset.

In addition to their training, students created informative posters to be displayed across the school, ensuring their peers recognise them as accessible mediators. They also reviewed and committed to their code of conduct agreement, underscoring their dedication to fostering a supportive and respectful school environment.

Year 6 students are excited and eager to participate in their upcoming responsibilities, poised to help during break two: on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This initiative not only prepares them for leadership but also reinforces a culture of empathy and cooperation within our school community.

Winter Carnival

On the 25th of June the year 5s and 6s took part in a winter sport all day carnival. We were one of 8 schools that took part they were West Balcatta, Lake Gwelup, Tuart Hill, Kyilla, Yokine, Southerland Dianella, Dianella Heights. The AFL team really had to knuckle down and show resilience as the first few games were highly difficult. The soccer team had many close games. The netball teams had shown a lot of determination and grit to overcome the obstacles to try and do their best. Overall, the AFL team came 5th, Soccer finished 3rd, “A” Netball team came 3rd and the “B” Netball team resulted in coming 5th. The “B” team were so close to a higher rank, but it came down to the wire. We must congratulate all the other schools especially West Balcatta for achieving first across two sports. All the participants did a great job and had a a lot of fun.
