Lees-McRae's History

“Banner’s Elk,” as the village was once called, is said to have been settled around 1850. By the end of the century, the Presbyterian Church was becoming established in the area. In the summer of 1895, Concord Presbytery sent a young student from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia to organize a church at Banner Elk. In 1897, the newly ordained Rev. Edgar Tufts returned as pastor of the church.

In the winter of 1899, concerned with the limited offerings of the district school which was supplemented only by summer school work conducted by the church, Tufts took some of the young people of the neighborhood into his study for further instruction. This small group, called the Class of 1900, marks the beginning of Lees-McRae College.

More than a hundred years after its founding, Lees-McRae continues the vision of the Rev. Tufts, inspiring students of the Southern Appalachian region and beyond. The College extends educational opportunities and service to diverse populations and continues to fulfill its motto—In the Mountains, Of the Mountains, For the Mountains.

The goal of an education in the arts and humanities is to connect students to the past while preparing them for the future. Our programs teach students how to think critically about what it means to be human, to explore how humanity defines and expresses itself, and to understand how our history informs our present. Through this process, students gain the skills they need to build a rewarding career and make a positive impact on the world.

A degree focused on business or management prepares students to take on a leadership role in a variety of different industries. Whether you want to start your own company, work for a corporation, or enter the non-profit sphere, you will need a marketable skillset rooted in understanding economics and business strategy. We offer a general Business Administration degree with specializations in Accounting, Finance, and Marketing as well as innovative majors and minors focused on sports and outdoor recreation.

Graduates from the School of Education and Social Sciences have one major commonality: a strong desire to serve others. Each of our programs in this school will teach you about the various challenges facing different populations, then equip you with the tools to solve those problems. The classes offer a combination of theory and practical experience that give students the skills they need to make a difference for children, families, individuals, and communities.

The goal of the natural sciences is to understand how the world works, why it works the way it does, and what that means for the millions of species that call it home. The science programs at Lees-McRae are focused on understanding the complex relationships between all living things and using that knowledge to promote the health and wellbeing of humans, animals, and the environment.

Lees-McRae College now offers four Graduate Programs for students to achieve a Masters Degree.

  • Master of Arts in Teaching which focuses on sending highly-qualified teachers into our schools so they can help provide opportunities for the next generation.
  • Master of Healthcare Administration focus on ensuring you will have the qualifications and knowledge to be a decision-maker on questions of management and policy. Learn how to identify the challenges in the 21st century healthcare system and lead your organization to develop effective solutions.
  • Master of Science in Criminal Justice builds and focuses on creating criminal justice leaders with the right skillset and qualifications for the real world.
  • Master of Science in Human Services  empowers students to be effective agents of change for individuals, families, communities, and organizations through practical training in skills such as service, leadership, research, and advocacy.

Michael Shope's Legacy

Our Men's Soccer program not only focuses on getting results on the pitch but also on making our players into better men, academics, and the programs family oriented culture. We truly embrace the traditions of Lees-McRae College, including the annual preseason "Shope Run", where the team runs up Sugar Mountain from the very bottom to the very top together in order to honor Michael Shope. In 2006, a very impactful teammate, Michael Shope, lost his life in a boating accident. He was the first to make it to shore and dove back in the water with shoelaces tied together to help keep him and his friends together. He managed to save two lives but unfortunately was at the cost of his own. Michael Shope was the ideal teammate and will be forever remembered and honored within this program by having his number retired and a logo for him on every match and training kit.
