The Problem

Almost half the world's population lacks access to the health services they need. Worldwide, malaria takes the live of over half a million people each year. A child dies nearly every minute from this deadly, yet preventable and treatable disease.

The Solution

Principles of equity and justice are core to the mission of United to Beat Malaria, formerly known as Nothing But Nets, it's who we are and what we do. For 17 years, we have worked to ensure that the most vulnerable people - young children, pregnant women, refugees and internally displaced people, and indigenous communities - are protected from malaria.

We believe that everyone, everywhere should have access to critical malaria services. To increase access, we need to invest in community health workers to protect families and communities. Community health workers are essential in the fight against malaria as they live and work in their communities which reduces travel times and cost to access medical care. This is impactful for refugee, rural, and last mile communities who cannot easily reach hospitals and health care facilities.

You can join our global community investing in community health workers to provide them with the trainings and tools that they need to diagnose and treat malaria.

Participant Support Story

Your generous support will help community health workers like Olga. Olga lives in Wachirpas, Ecuador and is a midwife. Olga has suffered from malaria multiple times and has also attended to mothers with malaria symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and overall pain.

As a community health worker and midwife, Olga encourages the pregnant women that she sees to sleep under a bed net and refers them to the local health center to be screened for malaria and tested, if needed. She is motivated to end malaria to give pregnant women a safe birth and their children a healthy life

Start your own Fundraiser

You can also create your own personal fundraising page through Classy! Follow the five easy steps below to set yourself up for success:

1. Make a donation to your own page. People are more likely to donate when they see that someone else has already contributed.

2. Set a time frame and a fundraising goal. Decide how long your fundraiser will run (we recommend 2-4 weeks) and a goal. Setting a time frame creates a sense of urgency and people are more likely to give when they know they are helping you reach a goal.

3. Make it personal! Add pictures and videos to the page and tell potential donors why you support United to Beat Malaria. Let your potential supporters know why you are fundraising for United to Beat Malaria and why our mission to create a healthier, more equitable world for all is important to you. Your supporters might not know anything about malaria or our campaign but they do know you. Here's some language to get you started:

This holiday season, I joined the world's largest grassroots movement to end malaria. I'm #UnitedinHealth and investing in community health workers because I believe that everyone, everywhere should have access to critical health services. No one should die from malaria, a deadly yet preventable disease. Help me reach my goal by donating to this page today!

4. Share with your friends and family first. Before posting on social media, share your fundraising page with your friends and family. Let them know why you are supporting United to Beat Malaria encourage them to make a donation - even if it's $10.00 USD! Then, share the page with your wider network, classmates and co-workers.

5. Make Multiple Touch Points. People receive SO many emails so don't be frustrated if your first email doesn't lead to a donation. Continue to share with your network, updating them on your progress, and letting them know when you are close to your fundraising goal.

Host Your Own Virtual or In Person Event

1. Learn the facts. Before you start planning your virtual or in person fundraiser, familiarize yourself with some of the key stats in the fight against malaria.

2. Start planning.

  • Set a fundraising goal and create your own Classy fundraiser. Not a digital fundraiser? You can also send a check to this address: United Nations Foundation / United to Beat Malaria PO Box 96539 Washington, DC 20077-7639.
  • Make a list of all the people you would want to invite to your event and send them an invite 2-3 weeks prior to the event.
  • Gather all of the materials you will need for the event.

3. Get creative! Choose what kind of virtual event you'd like to host. We've got some options to get you started:

  • Trivia Night: Host a virtual trivia night and ask your friends/family to donate $10.00 to participate! You can even use our United to Beat Malaria Trivia Quiz or use these facts and stats to create your own quiz.
  • 5K: Invite friends and neighbors and gather a team to run a 5K! Create your personal fundraising team page and ask participants to register online with a donation to United to Beat Malaria. Whether you're running separately or together, rally your community for this great cause.
  • Three-on-Three Tournament: Throw back to our Nothing But Nets roots and host a sports themed fundraiser. Shoot some hoops or host a soccer scrimmage. Celebrate nets!
  • Cooking Lesson: Gather your friends and family online and learn how to cook a new meal! Choose a recipe and have participants register online with a donation on your personal fundraising page.

4. Let us know! Share photos on social media and email us at info@beatmalaria.org. We would love to celebrate your event.
