MichaeL Van der Tol beyond digital imagery

My photography is about capturing a sense of place and the stories that live in everyday details. Whether it’s a rusted farm truck, a foggy cannery, or a ferry crossing coastal waters, I’m drawn to textures, light, and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. I try to photograph things as they are—weathered, working, and full of history. I’m inspired by the landscapes I’ve known, from the prairies to the west coast, and I aim to reflect the connection between people, place, and time. For me, it’s less about perfection and more about presence.

Selected Works

My seascapes are less about the ocean itself and more about the emotional horizon it creates—a space where stillness, movement, and light meet to reflect what we often can’t put into words. Through each frame, I try to capture the quiet dialogue between sea and sky, and the way it mirrors something deeper in all of us.

Through my natural landscape photography, I try to honour the quiet intelligence of the land—those moments where light, form, and wildness come together without asking to be noticed. It’s less about taking a picture and more about listening, being still long enough to let the landscape reveal something true. I’m drawn to the subtle shifts—the way a shadow stretches across moss, or how mist softens a treeline—because those are the moments that remind me nature doesn’t need to be dramatic to be deeply moving.

About Me

I’m a photographer based on Vancouver Island, inspired by the quiet beauty of nature, everyday moments, and coastal life. My work is all about capturing light, texture, and emotion—often shaped by the slower rhythms of island living. Whether I’m shooting the soft glow of a morning garden or the wild edge of the Pacific, I try to create images that encourage people to pause and really see what’s in front of them. With over 15 years in graphic and web design and a love for natural aesthetics, my image creation is rooted in storytelling and a deep connection to place.
