Painting With Words: A Frida Kahlo-inspired journal and guided workshop

I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint.”- Frida Kahlo

There is a kind of honesty in these words that refuses to look away. The foundation of this, as with everything Frida Kahlo did in her short 47-years of life, is art. How it saves. How it redeems. How it heals. In this workshop, inspired by the work, life, and words of Frida Kahlo, we won’t try to fix what feels broken or polish what feels incomplete. Instead, we’ll write from it. We’ll use Frida’s works to inspire and create a spark for new work.

With this Frida Kahlo-inspired writing journal and guided workshop, you'll work through some of the prompts inspired by her work. Using words as a paint brush, you'll create your own reality and make art that reflects who you are.

You'll also receive a supportive and low-pressure environment to give you time to write and reflect.

The Journal: Te Cielo, Frida!

The Cover of the Frida Prompt Journal

Frida's diary was an intimate portrait of the last 10 years of her life. This is where she told her own story, with words and visuals.

We too will tell our own stories, with a journal designed especially for this workshop.

Every member of the workshop will receive a digital copy of Te Cielo, Frida, a journal with prompts inspired by her journals, diary and art. The journal is designed to get you writing.

Through Frida's work and words, the journal and the workshop will touch on:

  • The body and identity
  • Memory and personal history
  • Pain, resilience, and transformation
  • The stories we carry and the ones we're still discovering

We’ll begin with a brief look at Frida’s work and context—just enough to spark something. From there, you’ll move through a series of guided prompts designed to help you access your own voice, your own stories, your own images.

This is generative and open-form. You choose the genre -- poetry, fiction, memoir, or write what comes to your heart. Frida didn't have rules so you shouldn't either!

This workshop is for writers at any stage of their practice and anyone curious about writing. This workshop is also for anyone looking for a space to reflect, create, and begin again. No experience is needed.
