"To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."
Naval Academy students are midshipmen on Active Duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the Academy for four years, graduating with Bachelor of Science degrees and commissions as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
The Naval Academy's academic program focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students also participate in eight weeks of annual summer training that introduces them to life at sea, operational units of the Navy and Marine Corps, and the responsibilities of a junior officer.
Aviation - Students learn about engineering, aerodynamics, air navigation, aviation physiology, and water survival. They also participate in flight training, which includes familiarization, instrument, aerobatic, navigation, and formation flights.
Marines - Students study majors related to naval service, such as chemistry, oceanography, nuclear engineering, and cyber operations. The Naval Academy also offers courses in leadership, ethics, and military law.
Surface Warfare - The Navy's Surface Warfare mission is to control sea space so that naval forces can operate and project power ashore.
Submarines - Students learn about the theory, construction, and operation of nuclear-powered submarines. They also train to lead small divisions of sailors and qualify as engineering officer of the watch, diving officer of the watch, and officer of the deck.
Plebe Summer
The purpose of Plebe Summer is to lay the foundation of the Academy's four-year professional development curriculum.
Spans 6-7 weeks where midshipmen transition from the civilian high school seniors they were into the capable naval leaders they are striving to become while at the Academy.
They must also learn the customs, terms and correct procedures of military life, many times committing this vast amount of new information to memory. Plebes will also take classes in basic seamanship and sailing, small arms, first aid and more.
After completing Plebe Summer they are welcomed into the Brigade to start the academic year in mid-August with the returning upperclassmen. They will continue to undergo physical, mental and moral training throughout the academic year.
Induction Day: June 29th, 2025
Summer Training
Third Class Summer - In the Summer between your plebe and third class years, you will go to sea for three weeks in Yard Patrol craft to various New England ports. Additionally, you will spend three weeks in either 44-foot Naval Academy sailing sloops or participating in naval tactical training, which include simulating SEAL and Marine Corps operations and receiving an indoctrination to the joint military arena.
Second Class Summer - During the summer before your second class year, you are introduced to every major branch of the Navy and Marine Corps. In one action-packed summer, you fly Navy aircraft in Pensacola, dive in a nuclear-powered submarine off the coast of Florida, and patrol, infiltrate and attack mock enemy positions in the forests of Virginia with the Marine Corps. You and your classmates will also report to Navy ships and submarines around the world for second class cruise, You become part of the crew for four weeks, taking part in drills, gunnery exercises and standing watches underway. This experience gives you first-hand knowledge of the daily routine of the Navy at sea. You also learn to appreciate the talents, responsibilities and perspectives of the enlisted men and women you will later lead as an officer.
First Class Summer - In the final summer, you get the chance to put your leadership skills to the test, both in the fleet and at the academy. For four to eight weeks, you join a Navy or Marine Corps operational unit, and this time your duties are those of a junior officer. Depending on your career interests and qualifications, you can choose a surface warship, submarine, aircraft carrier or aviation squadron. Those midshipmen interested in choosing the Marine Corps after graduation may attend a four-week officer candidate course in Quantico, VA, with a follow-on four-week tour attached to a Fleet Marine Force unit. Selected midshipmen may also participate in a four-week internship in a wide variety of disciplines.
Commissioning Week
Commissioning Week is a week-long celebration of graduation at the United States Naval Academy.
Herndon Climb - A tradition that marks the end of Plebe Year and takes place one week before Commissioning Week. Midshipmen climb the 21-foot gray Herndon Monument and place a midshipman cover on top.
Blue Angels - The Blue Angels perform an aerial show during Commissioning Week. Practice day is just as exciting as the actual show.
Ring Dance - A tradition since 1925 where second class midshipmen are “baptized” by having their class rings dipped in water from the Seven Seas.
Hat toss - A traditional ending to the ceremony where new officers toss their old hats into the air.
