  • The SMSU soccer program (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) continues non-conference action with a match against Upper Iowa (0-1-1)
  • The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
  • SMSU is coming off a 2-14-2 (2-10-2 NSIC) season in 2024.

LAST WEEK

  • The Mustangs started their 2025 campaign with a 6-0 win over the Dakota State Trojans last Sunday.
  • Freshman forward Virginia Pruitt scored two first half goals and provided an assist.
  • Senior forward Brooke Wetterstrom scored two second half goals within a four-minute period.
  • Sophomore defender Mercy Godfrey scored one goal and had one assist in the first half.

NSIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • After her performance against Dakota State, Virginia Pruitt was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8.
  • The freshman forward from Cashmere, Wash. led the NSIC in total points with five on the conference's opening weekend.
  • Pruitt is the first SMSU soccer player to receive a player of the week since 2023.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • SMSU head coach Clay Glasgow, entering his fourth season, returns 11 letter winners from 2024 and features six seniors, seven sophomores, five sophomores, and six freshmen.
  • The Mustangs are hoping to rely on seniors Brooke Wetterstrom and Laney Brill, who were selected as an NSIC 'Player to Watch'.
  • Junior Malorie Maderak, who scored three goals last season, will hope to add to her career total, meanwhile juniors Illjana Arbaugh and Sophia Sonnek will look to solidify the Mustang defense after playing in all 18 games last season.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Stella Litzen returns after starting in five games last season, making 23 saves in those games.

HEAD COACH CLAY GLASGOW

  • Clay Glasgow is in his fourth season as head coach and has a record of 12-32-10 overall, including 11-25-7 in NSIC play. He was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on Feb. 25, 2022.
  • Glasgow came to SMSU after spending eight seasons (2014-21) as head women's soccer coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) recording a mark of 49-86-5.
  • During his last two seasons at DWU, the Tigers amassed back-to-back winning seasons and qualified for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.

SERIES HISTORY

  • SMSU and Upper Iowa will face off against each other on the field for the 19th time, with a record of 5-11-2.
  • This is the first time since 2022 that Mustangs will face the Peacocks, when Upper Iowa won 1-0.

SCOUTING UPPER IOWA

  • Upper Iowa is led by first year head coach Patrick Ritter.
  • The Peacocks finished last season 4-8-4, and 4-7-3 in the GLVC.
  • Upper Iowa will rely on junior forward Haylie Hutchinson and freshman midfielder Rhea Buchanan as their attacking threat.

SMSU PICKED 12TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL

  • SMSU was selected 12th in the 16 team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • NSIC regular season and tournament champions Minnesota State was selected as the favorite to win the conference again, with 14 first place votes (coaches can't vote for their own school) and 224 points.
  • Concordia-St. Paul finished in second place with 202 points and a first-place vote, followed by Bemidji State in third place with 177 points. Fourth place St. Cloud State received a first-place vote and 176 points, and Augustana rounds out the top five with 169 points

NEXT MATCH: FORT HAYS STATE (KAN.) , SUNDAY, SEPT. 14, 12 P.M.

  • The Mustangs will face the Tigers of Fort Hays State for the 8th time, with SMSU holding a record of 1-6.
  • The last meeting between the two occurred last season on Sept. 15th, with Fort Hays State winning 3-1.
  • Fort Hays State is led by fourth year head coach Tyson John.
  • The Tigers finished last season 7-8-4, and 4-6-2 in the MIAA, losing in the quarterfinals of the MIAA tournament to Washburn.
  • Junior forward Chaley French and senior forward Sydney Cotter are the main goal threats for the Tigers.

MUSTANG HISTORY

  • SMSU is in its 30th season of soccer in 2025 and 29th season of competition (2020 was canceled).
  • The Mustangs have compiled an all-time record of 166-310-39, including 120-180-26 in NSIC games.
  • SMSU has made 14 NSIC tournaments and played in the region championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
  • SMSU has recorded four winning seasons in program history with the last coming in 2019.
