DESIGN PROPOSAL
In the vertical urban landscape of Atlanta, where buildings are often viewed from afar, public interaction with high-rise structures tends to be limited. For those who never enter these buildings, their familiarity with them remains surface-level at best. Consequently, the facade of a high-rise serves as a critical first impression, setting the tone for all interactions to follow.
Given these factors, should we rethink our approach to facade design? Can a building's facade capture the identity of its occupants or reflect the essence of the surrounding community? With this in mind, we aimed to create a facade that honors the diverse cultures and nationalities of the communities along the Buford Highway corridor.
Inspired by the geometric patterns found within textile designs from Nigeria, Philippines, Vietnam, Honduras, and Mexico, we created a triangular facade module that mirrors the distinctive geometry of these cultural textiles. Just as the textiles feature linking, coalescing, and reflecting patterns, we applied these same principles to our triangular facade module, developing a unique taxonomy of facade panels for our own design.
