Welcome to the Christmas edition of our newsletter which signals the close of a happy and successful term. Our Mayfield students have really impressed us this term with their hard work, determination, and kindness. Our Christmas lunch and jumper day as always was a wonderful opportunity to come together as one Mayfield family and celebrate all we have achieved together this term. It was also a time for us to reflect and show kindness for those less fortunate than ourselves by donating an item to the food pantry, we were truly humbled and grateful for the large volume of donations that have been received.
Please take some time to read the newsletter and appreciate all the wonderful opportunities that have been made available to our Mayfield students. In the New Year we will have many more enrichment opportunities for your children to take part in. Until then, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support for our school community and to wish you all a happy and safe Christmas along with my best wishes for 2026! The English department have hit the ground running this term! Our classrooms are busy hives of learning where students have tackled some pretty challenging units of work:
- Our Year 7s have fallen into the world of Greek myths and thoughtfully uncovering what makes a hero, what their downfall might look like and what consequences befall our defiant hero of Antigone.
- Our Year 8s have been caught up in the feuding land of Verona where Romeo and Juliet fall in love but their families’ conflict results in some dire consequences for the star-crossed lovers.
- Our Year 9s have been critical of Iago’s Machiavellian plans within Shakespeare’s play Othello and we’ve been eager to discover how everything unfolds. Will the jealousy of Othello bring the downfall of innocent Desdemona?
- Our Year 10s got stuck straight into battle in Scotland where our hero Macbeth gave in to his wife's plan of regicide and we uncover his fatal flaw: ambition. We've also been exploring some Unseen Poetry which means we have lots of literature practice already!
- Our Year 11s have been working SO hard and we couldn't be prouder of the progress seen with this year group. We've studied Power & Conflict Poetry, Unseen Poetry, exam practice and completed some very tough mocks! Keep it up, Year 11!
Finally, the English department have been working their socks off outside of lessons with the fabulous interventions on offer, English Skills Club and the incredible trips this term:
- Mamma Mia! The Musical
- An interview with author Alex Wharton
- A Macbeth workshop that worked with 11B1 from the Globe Theatre liaising with Oxford University Press
- An incredible production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Up Next: Poetry Live! - a vital trip for our Year 11 students to attend! Tickets available.
Literacy
Our Sparx Reader students have achieved an incredible milestone, completing over 2,000 hours of focused reading since September! This reflects their commitment to improving literacy and fostering a love for reading. To ensure every learner is supported, targeted literacy interventions have been delivered across all year groups, reinforcing our mission that no student is left behind. This term, we hosted two “Drop Everything and Read” assemblies, celebrating creativity with poems and short stories written by our own students. These events have been a fantastic way to promote reading for pleasure. We are also revamping our Reading Routes challenge to make reading more engaging, exciting, and rewarding. Watch out for new incentives and opportunities to explore books in fun ways! Don’t forget our Community Library Time every Thursday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, where staff, students, parents, and siblings can access the library, borrow books, and enjoy reading together.
In Mathematics, our students have been hard at work through their learning journeys. At KS3, Year 7 have covered core number skills such as place value, decimals, types of numbers and order of operations. Year 8 have been looking at sequences, equations, inequalities, and straight-line graphs. Year 9 have been studying proportion, standard form, and algebraic manipulation. KS4 students continue their learning on the GCSE course. Year 11 have just completed their November mock examinations and are reflecting on their performance. Additionally, a select group of Year 11 further maths students have been studying to gain an extra qualification. In the New Year, students in Year 7 to 10 will be completing their mid-year assessments. This is an opportunity for everyone to display their knowledge and to take stock of what needs to be done to continue moving forward. This year, we are offering some of our Year 7s and 8s the Axiom Maths programme whose brief is below. In Axiom Maths circles students engage with challenging maths tasks from beyond the National Curriculum, leading to an even greater experience of satisfaction! Students find a community of likeminded individuals that value and respect their mathematical abilities. Below are some observations made by students:
" I enjoy Axiom Maths because it helps me think above the standard and to always find other answers that may be in the question. I also enjoy this because it challenges us to use mathematical vocabulary to extend our answers, explain and show working on how we got them.”
"So far, I have found axiom maths to be a great way to train and improve my maths skills both mentally and using written methods. This programme has greatly helped me and I look forward to see what is to come over the next 5 years."

This assessment showcases their creativity and technical skills.
Greeting from the Geography Department at OAM. We have had a busy term with all year groups investigating different parts of planet Earth. Our Year 7 classes have been developing their navigation and map skills and have been looking at the physical and human factors that make up places – from local scales like Southampton, to international ones like continents and countries. We have more recently turned our attention to how and why some nations develop and others don’t, whilst looking at solutions to bring more equality to the world. Year 8 began the year examining one of the greatest challenges of our time – overpopulation. Just what impacts have 8.1 billion humans and their demands had on the natural world, and what pressures do our cities face. Then, as temperatures dropped, it was only right to begin exploring cold environments such as the Poles, the tundra wastes, and high mountain ranges to see how life has adapted to live there. Year 9 have worked hard tackling the biggest issues in our world today – everything from overfishing and energy insecurity to mining for rare earth minerals and our unfair global trading system. Year 10 students have made a positive start to their GCSEs. They began by investigating tropical storms and have since compared cities in high and low income countries, and are now just beginning to develop their understanding about the forces that shape our coasts – very important of course given our city’s location. Congratulations to our Year 11s who recently completed their mocks. They also undertook a fieldwork study on the differing living standards across Southampton. The skills they developed will help them on Paper 3. There is lots more exciting learning ahead in 2026, but for now, may we wish you all a safe and restful Christmas.
I would like to start by giving a big thanks to Mr. Gwynne and Mr. Moth who have done an amazing job at working well through the exams and for providing excellent teaching throughout the year. Also, a great thank you to our history students. The team and I have been blown away by the effort displayed by students this year, and look forward to taking you through the rest of the year. In Year 7, we have been focusing on the changes to Anglo-Saxon England, as well as understanding the importance of religion through the church at Conques. In Year 8 we have looked at the Power of the Monarchy, studying the continual impact of Magna Carta, the first parliament as well as investigating why Charles I would end up losing his head. In Year 9 we have focused greatly on the causes, consequences and experience of the First World War, moving from trench foot and death of the trenches, to the vast deserts of Africa with Laurence of Arabia, to the cold and unforgiving winter climate of Russia during the October Revolution. In Year 10 the students have been looking at the reasons, impact and experience of migrants between the industrial and modern period, from the Jewish migrants who created Marks and Spencer’s to the essential work of the Windrush generation to help set up the NHS. Finally, the Year 11s have continued with their research in to how the Nazis came to power in Germany, as well as the experience of living in Nazi Germany from the workers to the women and children. Thanks again to the Year 11s who were dedicated to doing the best they can revising day and night to do well in their History mocks. Make sure to continue with that effort!
Bonjour! What a busy year in the MFL department! We have completed 2 units on lots of different topics and have completed one end of unit assessment on reading and speaking. Year 7 have had a great term, learning the foundations to begin their journey of learning French. They have started working as teams in their classes and competing for points for their teams. They have learned lots of classroom vocabulary and now they are learning how to describe their families. Year 8 students are learning all about sport and leisure activities and learnt to describe where they live in autumn 1. Year 9 groups are moving on from talking about travel and holidays and are now describing where they live in more detail. Year 10 are learning all about healthy living and how to make healthy choices. They have now adjusted to the GCSE-style of teaching and learning. Year 11 have just finished their mock exams and have just got their results. They are looking forward to a rest from exams and studying, but not for long because the French mock speaking exams start mid-January and they need to learn all their general conversation questions 😊. Bonne chance! The French department wish everyone:
It’s been a busy term for PD! Our Year 7 and 8 students have been studying Citizenship. Year 7 have focused on human rights, active citizenship, and equality and diversity, while Year 8 continued to build on these themes. Year 9 began the term exploring different types of government and political parties, followed by a unit on money management, covering topics such as pay, tax, borrowing, debt, and budgeting. Year 10 have been learning how to make a strong start at KS4 and exploring careers, while also preparing for their upcoming work experience during lessons. Year 11 started with a focus on independent living, then moved on to an RSE unit as part of the statutory Relationships and Sex Education curriculum. Two of our student leaders attended the Oasis Student Leadership Conference in November, joining representatives from Oasis academies nationwide. Across all year groups, we have celebrated Black History Month, Anti-Bullying Week, and World Mental Health Day, encouraging students to engage with wider themes. Finally, we’re excited that our student leaders will visit the Houses of Parliament in the last week of term for a tour—an amazing experience for everyone involved!
Drama
Year 8 students have been working on communication, creativity and imagination studying Advert Theatre, Blood Brothers, Soap Opera and Exploring Practitioners. Students have been working on their practical skills and working towards their assessment lessons. I would like to give a big shoutout to Michael K, Lottie D, Ellie-Mai S, Tallulah C, Taylor A. This term, Year 9 have truly embraced creativity and collaboration in their drama lessons. They’ve explored two exciting areas: War Horse and Devising, and their enthusiasm has been nothing short of inspiring. Starting with War Horse, students faced the challenge of bringing life to a full-sized horse puppet, without any actual puppet! Using only tables and chairs, they worked together to create imaginative and convincing representations of Joey, the iconic horse from the play. This task demanded teamwork, problem-solving, and a willingness to think outside the box. Watching them transform everyday classroom furniture into something so dynamic was incredible. Their ability to adapt and commit to the process showed real maturity and creativity. Alongside this, Year 9 have delved into Devising, where they’ve had the freedom to create original performances from scratch. This has pushed them to step out of their comfort zones, experiment with ideas, and collaborate in ways that highlight their individuality and group strengths. The confidence and openness they’ve shown during these sessions have been remarkable. They’ve not only developed performance skills but also learned the importance of listening, sharing, and supporting each other’s ideas. I am immensely proud of how open-minded and dedicated Year 9 have been so far. Their willingness to take risks and embrace challenges has set a fantastic tone for the rest of the year. I can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
Dance
Our Year 10 students have been working hard on their Component 2 assessment. Each student has learned a two minute dance piece to perform as part of their assessment, focusing on developing their skills and techniques. Meanwhile, the Year 11 Dance group has been completing a mock Component 3 assessment. For this, students have created their own performances based on the exam board’s theme. Well done to all our dance students for their dedication and creativity!
Dance Live
Students and staff have been working hard behind the scenes to put together a brilliant performance. We currently have 75 students taking part and looking forwards to showcasing this on the 27th January in the Dance Live event.
Music
It’s been another busy and creative term in the music department. Year 7 have been learning different singing techniques and putting these into practice. I have been particularly impressed by how many students have been brave enough to sing solos! They have also begun learning to play the keyboard and some have even managed to play with both hands. Year 8 have been learning how to play the Ukulele. They have worked hard and can now play some famous riffs including “We Will Rock You”. They have also learnt about Film Music and have practised playing famous film music on the keyboards. Year 9 have been studying Beethoven. They have learnt about the orchestra and have studied how Beethoven created music for different instruments. They have been practising famous Beethoven pieces on the keyboard. Year 10 have made a very positive start to the GCSE course They have been learning about popular music and have also been using a variety of different composing styles using keyboards, drums, guitars and Garage Band software to create their pieces. They are also working hard in their individual music lessons and will be showcasing these skills in upcoming performance opportunities. Year 11 have spent the term working on both their GCSE performance coursework and continued to study different musical genres including the Concerto through the ages. They still have a lot of hard work ahead of them and will need to revise thoroughly for the mock exam next term. Music club after school on Monday is still proving to be very popular and students are also using the practices rooms during break times for individual and group practising.
As we wrap up an incredible term, the PE team would like to celebrate some fantastic achievements from our students. Thank you to everyone who has taken part and represented the Academy with pride!

Careers education is becoming an increasingly pivotal part of life at our Academy, ensuring that every student is equipped with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their future. This term has been packed with exciting opportunities that have helped broaden horizons and raise aspirations across all year groups. In September, our Year 11 students attended a vibrant college fair that opened doors to a wide range of post-16 pathways. Representatives from local colleges and training providers shared valuable insights into courses, apprenticeships, and career options, giving students the chance to ask questions and start planning their next steps. The event was a fantastic way to kick-start their journey beyond GCSEs. Meanwhile, some of our Year 9 students had the unique opportunity to visit the University of Southampton, where they explored campus life and gained a deeper understanding of what higher education can offer. This experience helped demystify university and inspired many to think about the possibilities that lie ahead. We were also delighted to welcome Humanutopia, who worked with both Year 10 and Year 11 to develop aspiration, resilience, and self-belief. These workshops encouraged students to reflect on their goals and take ownership of their future, creating a positive and empowering atmosphere across the year groups.
Finally, Year 10 have recently launched their work experience programme, marking an important milestone in their career journey. This initiative will allow students to gain hands-on experience in the workplace, helping them to build essential skills and explore potential career paths.
What an amazing first term at Mayfield for our Year 7 students. I am so very proud of the progress we have made so far, with high levels of attendance, excellent uniform and a high level of punctuality to school and lessons. Year 7 have settled in to our routines and their new tutor groups. It was so positive to meet so many of you on the academic review day and I know our tutor team are keen to work with all our parents to ensure that your child has the best possible experience every day. The year group has been working very hard in lessons with several already achieving the "250" points emerald award. Our football team has made a great start and we have had some excellent results so far. Miss Fernandez is travelling in the new year for 6 weeks, but will be back after February Half term. After Christmas, please direct any pastoral concerns to your child's tutor or Mr Browning. Have a great Christmas!
Year 8 have made a positive start to the year with lots of positive points having been gained. We have celebrated students achieving their Amethyst Awards which equates to 100 points or more, but we also now have individuals who have already achieved their Emerald Award of 250 points or more. A fantastic achievement. We also need to congratulate the under 13 girls football team who won a Saint's Foundation Utilita EFL National Girls Cup tournament for Southampton Schools at Staplewood Training Ground convincingly and are now through to the next Regional rounds.
This term has been full of hard work, creativity, and brilliant achievements. Whether you’ve taken part in sports teams, enjoyed lessons, or supported friends, you should be proud of all you’ve accomplished. As we reach the end of a busy and exciting term, we want to take a moment to celebrate everything Year 9 have achieved and look ahead to a well-deserved Christmas break! There has been some outstanding lesson taking place with many students showing the Mayfield Way. Our boys’ football team showed fantastic determination and teamwork this term. From competitive matches to impressive training sessions, you’ve represented the school brilliantly. Well done to the girls’ football team for their commitment and outstanding effort. You’ve displayed excellent sportsmanship and skill in every game. The netball team have had an amazing season so far, showing great communication, strategy, and resilience. Your hard work during practices and matches truly paid off. One of the standout events this term was our visit to the university. Students had the chance to explore the campus, meet university ambassadors, and learn more about future pathways. You asked thoughtful questions and represented the school with maturity and curiosity — well done! We hope you enjoy a relaxing holiday filled with family, fun, and festive treats. Take time to rest and recharge — you’ve earned it!
Year 10 students have made an exceptional start to their GCSE courses this term, demonstrating maturity, focus, and a real eagerness to learn. Their commitment has been evident not only in the classroom which has been highlighted by many members of staff but also through their involvement in enrichment opportunities. In September, we were thrilled to see enthusiastic participation in the recent Humanutopia workshops, which challenged students to reflect on their aspirations, themselves personally and their personal journey to come. In addition, we had students enjoy an inspiring trip to Saints FC, where they engaged in activities that combined leadership and resilience skills. These experiences have helped to foster a sense of community and ambition, and we are confident that this strong start will lead to continued success throughout their GCSE journey. Myself and Miss Sullivan wish all students a very happy Christmas and fabulous 2026!
Year 11 has had a very busy but productive Autumn Term. Local colleges visited us to provide information about what they can offer our students, and following this, many students submitted college applications, with many being offered places after interviews. A large number of students participated in trips related to their GCSE studies; some went to Oxford University to experience university life. A major focus this term has been the mock examinations. The way the students prepared for these was commendable, with students attending intervention sessions every day after school. Year 11 displayed a positive and mature attitude towards their exams and showed great resilience during the exam period. The conduct of students during the exams was once again very good, allowing them to focus fully on doing their best in each exam. A large number of students have also completed assessments in their BTEC subjects. Our prefect team has been busy helping around the academy, and the Prom Committee has been working hard to make arrangements to ensure our prom will be a night to remember for our students. Year 11 should enjoy a restful Christmas break, and we look forward to their return in the new year, full of energy and positivity for the final push towards their GCSEs.
This term has been filled with exciting opportunities for students to learn and celebrate achievements beyond the classroom. We began with a Year 11 trip to Thorpe Park—a fantastic reward for hard work and a chance to build team spirit ahead of exams. Our KS4 visit to Kew Gardens provided an immersive experience in biodiversity and conservation, enriching both science and geography learning.
The Geography Department also led several urban fieldwork trips in Southampton, giving students valuable hands-on experience in data collection and analysis—essential skills for GCSE success. One of the highlights was when 110 students travelled to London, visiting the Natural History Museum and enjoying a walking tour of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. This combined cultural enrichment with an introduction to British history and politics. We also celebrated positive behaviour with a series of reward trips:
- Red Spider Climbing – building confidence and resilience
- Wet Wheels – a unique adventure on the water
- Hi Score Arcades – a fun social experience for students
These experiences have enhanced subject knowledge, encouraged independence, and created lasting memories. Both staff and students have praised their educational value and enjoyment. We look forward to more enriching opportunities in the spring term!
What an incredible day! This year's Christmas Fayre at Oasis Academy Mayfield was our biggest and brightest yet, with over 45 fantastic stalls, an amazing raffle, and unofficially but very proudly, the best Santa’s Grotto in Southampton (or so we like to joke… but honestly, we’re not sure it’s a joke anymore!). We were delighted to welcome hundreds of visitors through our doors. The festive atmosphere was buzzing thanks to a brilliant mix of entertainment. The Grinch made an appearance (and behaved himself… mostly), our Elvis tribute singer wowed the crowd with iconic classics, and the talented children performers from Superstars Youth Theatre filled the hall with beautiful songs. A huge THANK YOU goes out to our hardworking Leisure Team staff, our wonderful volunteers, dedicated kitchen staff, and all of our amazing student helpers. We also want to acknowledge the incredible amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into planning a day like this — none of it would be possible without the time, creativity, and dedication of every person involved. We’re thrilled to share that we raised a fantastic amount of money, which will go directly toward supporting Oasis Mayfield and Oasis Sholing families. Your generosity truly makes a difference. Thank you to everyone who attended, helped, donated, sang, crafted, sold, cooked, dressed up, or simply joined in the fun. We can’t wait to make next year even better!
