Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a treatable mental disorder that affects a person's brain and behavior, leading to their inability to control their use of substances like legal or illegal drugs, alcohol or medications. Symptoms can be moderate to severe, with addiction being the most severe form of SUD.
The DSM-5 definition of Substance Use Disorder is as follows...
Substance use impairs ability to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home. Continued use of the substance despite it causing significant social or interpersonal problems. Reduction or discontinuation of recreational, social, or occupational activities because of substance use.
Symptoms associated with a Substance Use Disorder fall into four major grouping: Impaired Control, Social Impairment, Risky Use, and Pharmacological Criteria.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked every year as June 26th, to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

Reach out and make contact with others. Talk with friends and loved ones. Recognize and accept your feelings. Express your feelings; consider keeping a journal to help in the process. Structure your time. Maintain your usual schedule as much as you can. Get extra rest and set aside time to relax.
Practice meditation, yoga and mindfulness. Drink plenty of water during the day. Go for a 10 minute walk everyday. Get plenty of sleep each night. Eat fruit and vegetables. Set aside time for yourself to enjoy leasure activities. Stay in touch with your friends and family.
