Careers in Aging

A Career Exploration Activity

What careers come to mind when you think of a career in aging?

“It's paradoxical that the idea of living a long life appeals to everyone, but the idea of getting old doesn't appeal to anyone.” ― Andy Rooney

What is Gerontology?

Gerontology is the study of aging processes and individuals across the life course. It includes:

  • The study of physical, mental, and social changes in people as they age;
  • The investigation of changes in society resulting from our aging population; and
  • The application of this knowledge to policies and programs.

Gerontologists improve the quality of life and promote the well-being of people as they age through research, education, practice, and the application of interdisciplinary knowledge of the aging process and aging populations.

Did the information in the video change your perception about working with the aging population? Why or why not?

“The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’ve been.” – Madeleine L’Engle

Careers in Aging

People 65 years and older are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. And, although there are a broad range of exciting career opportunities in aging, there are not enough professionals to keep pace with the increasing demand.

Career opportunities in the aging field are expanding

Geriatrician

Geriatricians focus on maintaining patient well-being and independent functioning. They diagnose and treat conditions that may commonly occur with age. If they suspect cancer, neurological problems or other serious health issues, they may also refer patients to specialists and work with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care.

Geropsychology

The field within psychology that applies the knowledge and methods of psychology to understanding and helping older persons and their families maintain well-being, overcome problems, and achieve maximum potential during later life.

Home Health Aide and Personal Care Aides

Home health aides and personal care aides typically do the following:

  • Assist clients in their daily personal tasks, such as bathing or dressing
  • Housekeeping, such as laundry, washing dishes, and vacuuming
  • Help to organize a client's schedule and plan appointments
  • Arrange transportation to doctors' offices or other outings
  • Shop for groceries and prepare meals to meet a client's dietary specifications
  • Keep clients engaged in their social networks and communities

Geriatric Nursing

A geriatric nurse cares for the elderly, focusing on the development and implementation of treatment plans for chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disorders. They also educate and counsel families of elderly patients who suffer from acute and chronic conditions.

Social Worker

Social workers who support older adults help seniors live safely and with dignity by connecting them to services and advocating for their well-being. This career is a great fit for students interested in helping others and making a meaningful impact in their community.

Elder Care Law

Elder law attorneys are advocates for the elderly and their loved ones. Most elder law attorneys handle a wide range of legal matters affecting an older or disabled person, including issues related to health care, long term care planning, guardianship, retirement, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and other important matters.

Sales and Marketing Career in Aging

Marketing to the aging generation requires insight and understanding.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. – Leo Buscaglia
