2024 Spark Creativity Bursaries recipients:

Brooklyn, Radio Television Journalism, Ivany Campus

"Receiving this award will have a monumental impact on my education and experience at NSCC. I will be able to focus properly on my studies without so much financial stress. Thank you so much for your generosity. Education has always been a lonely journey for me, and it is so reassuring to be supported in such a palpable way. My mission is greater than I am. Please trust that, in supporting me, countless other people will be supported as I continue down my path."

"I have a sincere passion for connection, conversation and creating documentary style media. I truly believe that in healing ourselves, and sharing our own stories, we help to heal the collective. I've been fortunate to explore, and share, this conviction through various community engagement projects. I believe that by taking the Radio, Television, Journalism program at NSCC, I'll be able to gain the skills and connections required to pursue this passion full time.

I intend on creating documentary-style media, centering empathy and overlooked narratives. It is my greatest hope to do work which will coalesce people together, while also encouraging wellness and understanding. I believe I will succeed in this profession upon graduation as my intentions are concise, and it is work I am deeply passionate about. I believe that, with the help of this award, I am on the path to achieving my goals."

Evan, Digital Animation, Truro Campus

"This award will allow me more leeway to purchase necessary materials for my courses such as textbooks and art supplies. It will allow for me not to choose between school expenses and other necessary costs like food and rent."

"I want to study animation while remaining close to home. NSCC has the best animation program in the province. My goal is to perfect my craft and become a successful animator in the industry. This award will give me the support I need to succeed. I would like the donor to know that I am eternally grateful for supporting me with their donation. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."

Joel, Screen Arts, Ivany Campus

"My goal is to gain a degree in the field of film production. My other goal is to make authentic and impactful films. This award enables me to purchase a laptop which is needed to complete this course which in turn helps me fulfill my goal of making films in the future. I would like to thank the donors very much for this award. This goes a long way to support my education and my future."

"I am truly passionate about the art of storytelling, particularly in cinematic storytelling. My other interests are music and exploring nature. I chose to attend NSCC because of the hands-on nature of screen arts and the ability to collaborate with various students from various art courses. Its location is also a key factor because I grew up in Nova Scotia so its comforting to be able to learn about what I love in a place I'm familiar with. I was interested in animation as a kid and began to make short animations on my home PC. I have memories of watching all the behind-the-scenes footage on the DVDs at home."

Williams, Applied Media and Communication Arts, Ivany Campus

"Moving to a new country is not easy, and especially combining schooling with it. The financial strain it comes with can be overwhelming. This award will no doubt go a long way to assist in reducing the financial load that comes with schooling and put me in a positive light for the future."

"My name is Williams, and I relocated to Canada almost two years ago. For starters, I decided to attend NSCC, because of its rich history and diverse cultural acceptance, and I saw it as an ideal place for a new immigrant from a black race to thrive. Besides, a few contacts of mine who attended the school before I did also put in some good words too. Also, with my interest in media, Ivany Campus offers a program that will surely assist with my future pursuit.

Before coming to Canada, I had a good background in media, and my future goal is to use the newfound knowledge I will acquire from schooling with NSCC to further better myself to deliver media services, and this award will help me in accomplishing my goal."
